Drive to Northampton 2x a week or Travel to London 3x a week from Oxfordshire

We are moving to Oxfordshire and I have a job offer @ Northampton which will be approximately 70mins driving each way but only 2x a week in the office.

DH wants me to take the job as it's just 2 days in the office. I am reluctant as I feel it might be too much for me but a great career move if I want to remain in my field (not passionate about it).

The alternative I am leaning towards is to remain with my company but look for an internal mobility(different field) in the London office. Commute will be same time but will involve walking, trains (2changes) and walking. Pay will be similar. However, I am expected 3 days in the office

We have 3 kids in primary school and it will require after school clubs on the days I am in the office. DH will always take them in.

The alternative would be to move to Wellingborough or Glasgow where commute will no longer be an issue. We have reserved a newbuild in Oxfordshire but not exchanged so can still withdraw.

YABU = Don't do 3days commute into London (1:20mins)
Reasonable - Drive to Northampton 2x a week and save yourself train journeys. Its only 2x a week

Glasgow?!
Do you mean Corby?

Not sure what your voting means but I’d take the job in Northampton. That London commute will be a pain in the arse

Take the Northampton job and move to Wollaston, Bozeat, or Olney just not Wellingborough!

Where is your husband going to be working? How will his commute be? Couldn't you live in Northampton?

linenalltheway · 20/05/2022 17:37

Whereabouts inOxfordshire? It totally depends on the traffic eg getting to the M40 and what time you will be commuting and on what days of the week.

I'd take 70 min driving over trains and buses any day but is it actually 70min in rush hour? Try the Waze app at the right time of day

Also it's quite stressful having a commute if you're having to get back for a fixed time of after school clubs, what happens if your train is delayed?

Bozeat is tiny, Olney is v expensive but then you have London money
where in Oxfordshire to drive to in Northants,> from the top of the county it's a fairly straight hack though northants west side

Move to Milton Keynes!
Easy commute to London, easy drive to Northampton, probably a better/bigger house for your money than Oxfordshire (or cheaper for similar), very green place to live (despite the reputation it has crazy high ratio of parks and greenery to people), some good schools, lots for kids to do and more...
And as of today we are officially a city 😁
I grew up in Northants and Oxon, spent many years living and working in London, but have ended up in MK and find it a great place to live. Shout if you want more info.

Olney prices are absolutely nothing like London prices 🙄

I've done the Northampton-Oxford commute. It's tedious (so many roundabouts!) but doable, especially if not every day, and also when you consider that the Oxford-London train can get absolutely packed. Download something interesting to listen to in the car. Will the commute take you through the horrendous Oxford rush hour, though? Northampton rush hour doesn't tend to be anywhere near as bad.
