Just had a letter from a credit agency about a penalty for not paying my vehicle tax.

Hands up - I haven’t paid my vehicle tax but they have sent the V11 and reminders to my old address.

I updated my driving licence with my new address - Apparently it tells you online that you need to change your logbook too but I didn’t change my driving licence online - I did it by post as I needed a new photo too.

AIBU to expect them to change my address on their system and send things to the correct one?

I can appeal the penalty by writing a letter explaining the situation - has anyone done this and what was the outcome please?

Registered keeper address needs updating separately to your licence. Has always been the case and is unfortunately your responsibility. We get notifications by email now not post.

You are being unreasonable.
It's your responsibility to update the details on your log book.
Off the top of my head I think you can be fined upto a thousand pounds so probably not your best defence

Yes you're being unreasonable. Ignorance isnt really an excuse as far as they're concerned. Failing to update your logbook can also result in a £1,000 fine so tbh I'd just consider yourself lucky. If you knew your car wasn't taxed you could have phoned them up to sort this out before they got in contact with you. If you didn't know it wasn't taxed then you need to be more organised with it, its a once-a-year job, just stick it in your calendar or something.

Your driving licence is a different thing entirely to your car tax.

Nicnak2223 · 19/05/2022 16:21

Road tax is for the vehicle, licence is for the driver they don't need to be connected. Yabu

Thank you for reminding me my vehicle tax is due end of May!

Chelsea26 · 19/05/2022 16:31

Fair enough - I haven’t moved often so really didn’t know this was common knowledge.

Have taxed, changed my address, paid the penalty and set up a DD and signed up for email updates for the future!

(I might just get a form from the post office on my dog walk this afternoon to see if it says it on there for my own interest…) :-)
