Throat infections?

Is anyone else hearing of lots of people with throat infections/ tonsillitis at the moment? I’ve spoken to 6 so far (all women) with throat infections over the last few days, some with white puss dots on their tonsils. Most of them are not connected to each other, each of them have mentioned they know of others with it too though? A couple have also lost their voices waking with agonising pain in the night.

This is Cheshire/ Manchester area. I know Covid is rife too but these are all testing negative? It just seems a little too coincidental they’re mentioning the exact same symptoms…

I have awful throat pain at the moment, it's kept me awake the past 2 nights. I can barely swallow when I wake in the morning and my glands are very swollen and painful to touch. Not sure if it's tonsillitis or something else but it's not very pleasant at all. Sad

Me too!
Live in Kent.

I'm down in South London but I had one over the weekend. Red throat, slightly spotty, and a fever for 3 days. No sniffly cold symptoms. Just aches, headache, fever, and a horrible sore throat.

Yes down in the south east here and its quite at large. But all testing negative

Happycow · 18/05/2022 22:15

Omg yes! Had a really bad bout lasting over a week about a fortnight ago, then came back less severely weekend just gone. Not quite as bad as tonsillitis but pretty close! Swollen glands, could hardly swallow, woke me up at night, co-codamol didnt touch the pain. Im south of london, since there seems to be a trend!

MamaCar · 18/05/2022 22:16

Me too! Up in Glasgow. Haven’t seen spots on my tonsils but aching throat and my glands are swollen!

dalmatianmad · 18/05/2022 22:17

I've got a horrendous sore throat and bilateral ear pain since being covid positive approx 10/7 ago.
Struggling to swallow pain relief. Horrible.

SeaToSki · 18/05/2022 22:21

Im in East Coast US and have horrible throat pain, hurts to swallow, even waking me up. But I was covid positive and they say I also have tonsillitis which must have taken advantage and jumped on board too. I was given the monoclonal antibodies and some antibiotics and that has fixed everything except this bastard throat pain.

Neverendingdust · 18/05/2022 22:26

What’s thrown me is how all 6 have had near enough the same symptoms within such a short period of time, 2 completely lost their voices and most have swollen glands. My first thought is Covid, as a few have said their Dr’s diagnosed upper respiratory system infection, yet all negative?

My daughter had a terrible sore throat recently. It turned out it was strep whoch then developed into scarlet fever.

averythinline · 18/05/2022 22:49

Yes ended up on 2 different antibiotics.....started as cold/croaky but went to dagger on one side.. ...

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/05/2022 22:56

I’ve got exactly this and started a thread to moan about it the other day. DD got it first, then me, now DH. My sister lives abroad and her family has it too.

Painful throat, hacking chesty cough, intermittent streaming cold, voice loss, sweating, massive glands. Can’t sleep due to coughing. Minimal sense of taste. No appetite. DD and DH both had high temps.

Been chatting to a group of friends spread across the country tonight and there’s loads of it. Everyone including us getting negative LFTs.

JMKid · 18/05/2022 22:57

I've got it atm, in South East. Was agony to swallow as so swollen. Got told no antibiotics as didn't have pus spots so to gurgle salt water, drink lots of water and lots of pain killers.

JohnnyDeppatemyhamster · 18/05/2022 23:01

My daughter's got tonsillitis!! Just went to the doctor's today.

Neverendingdust · 18/05/2022 23:05

@AnneLovesGilbert so strange how it seems to be everywhere yet no positive results? Hopefully it’s gone soon for you. Before Covid you never really heard of outbreaks of bugs affecting so any people as you do now. It was only a few weeks ago I commented on a Norovirus thread saying I was hearing a lot had it around me. Makes me wonder if the speed of Omicron has mixed in with other viruses to be spreading so fast like this.

I've had a sore throat/lost voice thus week. No spots on my tonsils, definitely more a respiratory infection - sinus pain and coughing up gunk/crackly chest. To be fair if I get a cold it's generally where it ends up. Negative LFTs and only had covid about 9 weeks ago and it was nothing like this.

FabulousKilljoys · 18/05/2022 23:35

DD11 had an awful throat with Covid in March that turned into tonsillitis in April. All told she had 8 weeks straight of horrible swollen and sore throat that even antibiotics didn't clear up. In the last couple of weeks it's finally come right.

Nietzschethehiker · 18/05/2022 23:38

How strange seeing this thread, ds2 has just had tonsillitis (as in still on the antibiotics) and I vaguely did think it was a bit of a surprise as it seemed to come out of nowhere and he's really not susceptible to bugs as such. Never had it before. I didn't really think too much of it because well....dc get the odd illness. He tested negative as well. He did have Covid about 3 months ago.

ThreeLittleDots · 18/05/2022 23:51

Confirmation bias. I've not heard of anyone near me having a sore throat.
