Take another Eton Mess to Downing St

Jamie Oliver is cross about the government reversing its BOGOFF decision in favour of food manufacturers. He suggests those who are as cross as him should join him and take an Eton Mess to Downing St at 12.30 on Friday to illustrate the Eton Mess inside. Not sure what you will do with it when you get there. AIBU to suggest taking a spoon might be useful?

My initial thought was to knock on the door of number 10, hide behind the bin and then fling the Eton Mess all over Boris when he answers opens it.

Obviously this is problematic and a waste of a classic pudding . However, I am going to enjoy the idea in my head.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 17/05/2022 10:36

I much prefer Angelica's idea. Agree wasteful but immensely pleasing. Is that the best Jamie can offer though?

newnamethanks · 17/05/2022 10:44

It's the best on offer so far. Agree concept could do with some work. Eton Mess is possibly the best idea for a Jubilee pudding "70 years. And look what Eton's done to my country".

I haven't seen any ' bogof' offers for a long time , maybe buy two or three packs of small ham or other processed meats for £3 type thing, but not on chocolate or crisps and I go to a range of different supermarkets.
Maybe I'm not looking that hard?
It's a silly idea anyway, waste of food , plus nobody not important can get down Downing Street these days ( not like years ago!)
plus they will be looking out for JO now too!

the80sweregreat · 17/05/2022 11:16

Even if they hang around outside the gates they will be moved on with their food.

newnamethanks · 17/05/2022 11:25

Yes, not practical at all. I think JO just very cross about food and child health. Martin Lewis was equally furious yesterday about energy costs and lack of government action. William Haig, ex Tory PM is also very cross with Bozo. Frankly, I'm reaching the point where cynical smirking is the only response to everything. Just like Bozo.

I haven’t seen BOGOF offers for literally years, on anything. Does it actually mean a ban on special offers on all food/processed food? If so, I hope not. Those offers are very useful at the best of times, let alone the worst of times, like now, when basically everyone except Jamie fucking Oliver apparently is feeling the pinch every time they get to the checkout. My family don’t eat only processed stuff but it’s definitely handy to have a few bits that can be chucked in the oven.

John Major too.

You don't need to take an Eton Mess to Downing Street, there's already one residing at number 10.

Pitch forks and flaming torches might be more useful to the country.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/05/2022 12:52

Only 3 members of the cabinet are Old Etonians AFAIK

newnamethanks · 17/05/2022 13:34

Other public schools are permitted. Winchester. Harrow. Ampleforth etc. The premise holds.

I'm taking cheese and wine.

I can afford economy burger cheese slices and lambrini.

I shall fling the slices slightly melted and sticky in the heat.

If anybody says they like Lambrini, it's there's to do with as they wish!

MakeThingsRight · 17/05/2022 13:40

*theirs!

I thought the BOGOF deals were removed during Covid at the height of the stockpiling nonsense. Must admit haven’t noticed their return in my local tesco but might just not be on the stuff we buy. I think Jamie’s being a bit naive if he thinks people are going to get behind this when food prices are going through the roof. I frequently used to give the “free” item to my elderly parents ( and sometimes told them it was a BOGOF even when it wasn’t when I just wanted to treat them)

Biker47 · 17/05/2022 14:06

I must be out the loop, what's Jamie Oliver whinging on about now?

user1471457751 · 17/05/2022 14:18

Not really the point but William Hague was never Prime Minister, he was leader of the Conservative Party and leader of the Opposition.

newnamethanks · 17/05/2022 14:49

Thank you User147 and I spelled his name incorrectly as well. Age and years of Tories wearing me out. I fear I won't outlive their horrible rule.

Pipe down Jamie

WildOats5678 · 17/05/2022 15:18

Ironic coming from Jamie Oliver who is a big yo-yo dieter and uses more oil in his cooking than what my local Tesco stocks 🙄 He really needs to just disappear.

Lazerbeen · 17/05/2022 15:20

How about Jamie lobbies to address the fundamental and underlying factors that cause obesity in children rather than adbitary banning turkey twisters or buy one get one free offers? It's very performative to be able to push for something to be banned and tick it off the list, also quite condescending to think it's down to such simple reasons that people are obese. Really what difference is it going to make on a population level?

Yeah his recipes are often full of unnecessary fats and salt. So much bloody salt. He is also overweight so perhaps should listen to his own wonderful advice eh.

One of them is the Prime Minister though. And he's a mess by anyone's standards.
