To think voice clips should be banned?

I'm not talking about voicemail. I have nothing against a short message to say that you tried to call, give details on when would be good to call back, etc etc.

I'm talking about the voice clips you can record on Whatsapp, messenger and so on. Maybe it's just my circle, but some of my friends will leave about 10x1 minute voice clips. In order to listen to them, I need to have a quiet, private space, time to listen to them all, and some way to note down everything they've said because by the time I've got to the last one I can't remember what was said in the earlier ones. With a text, you can just read back to make sure you've replied to everything they've said. If you need to reply a little later, you have to relisten to the whole thing again. Voice clips only benefit the sender, not the receiver.

They were a good idea to try out, but now we've seen how insanely annoying they are, it's time for them to be treated as a failed experiment.

Come to think about it, I have noticed that none of my English friends use them, only my Spanish, Italian and Greek pals. So maybe it's partly the anti-social Brit in me that feels more comfortable with the cool distance of a written message.

They annoy the hell out of me. If you can't type, dictate it.

Lolabalola · 16/05/2022 22:08

That's fine if you have no eye sight problem
My fil, with amd ,uses WhatsApp for that very reason , he can quickly send a short message rather than struggling to type or finding someone to do it for him .
So YABU but then I can also see why you find it intensely annoying in your circumstances!
So keep the voice clip option but ditch the colleagues?

Honaloulou · 16/05/2022 22:09

I used to have an awful boss that did this. YA very much NBU.

Maybe they are more confident with spoken English than written English, I think that's very normal for people who don't have English as their native language.

QueenCamilla · 16/05/2022 22:09

Voting for a full ban.

When I was online dating it used to creep me out all of a sudden receiving a breathy (they are always breathy! ) random voice message from a man I've never met.

I suppose it's a great tool for those who don't fancy their monologues interrupted.

Sorry I meant to quote the OP there re: English as foreign language

Sexheadacheouch · 16/05/2022 22:10

You know on whatsapp you can speed them up right? I have a friend who leaves several minutes of whinge and I listen to her at triple speed

Omg my family do this and it drives me insane! One was about 20 mins! And it becomes like a running commentary 'oh did I tell you about aunty Mabel, oh there's someone at the door, oh hang on a minute, now where was I'

Where is this magic speed up button!

I fucking hate them, I rarely bother listening to them - just text me

Scabbyknackers · 16/05/2022 22:17

I actually quite like them! Granted I've never had a 20 min one 🤣 I've moved away so It's nice to have little snippets of my mates talking to me without having to have a full phone call as I know we'll be on ages. Similarly video clips.

If I message someone for the first time on OLD and they reply with a voice note I don't bother listening though. It just says 'lazy!'

Ikeptgoing · 16/05/2022 22:18

I don't listen to voice clips
I just send reply "you sent voice clips, and have deleted, can't listen to them, text me instead pls"

seensome · 16/05/2022 22:18

Same here, can't stand listening to them, can't be bothered to listen and remember what's been said, they don't get the same in return.

Ikeptgoing · 16/05/2022 22:19

You don't have to listen to voice clips - just delete

Same way you don't have to listen to long tel messages you gotta ring in to listen to. Someone can email or text me. If it's important I'll read , if it's not, I won't.

20 minutes is a podcast not a voice note GrinGrin
I only have a couple of friends that use them, and usually short and sweet. I just wouldn't listen if it was all the time.

DressingGownofDoom · 16/05/2022 22:21

In one of my group chats no one ever listens to them so we have all given up 😅 I have multiple kids I can't get peace to sit and listen to chatting, the minute I press play someone will start asking for a drink or something

LondonQueen · 16/05/2022 22:21

My friend loves to do this and it honestly drives me mad. You can speed them up on WhatsApp but not on iMessage.

Sillystripytail · 16/05/2022 22:42

Ugh yes, a full ban please! I used to be in a what's app group of women, some I knew well and some I didn't and a couple would send long voice notes. I couldn't ever be bothered listening to them, it was such an effort. Thankfully I left that group early in the first lockdown. I didn't need the extra stress!

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 16/05/2022 22:46

Just hold the phone to your ear and listen to it like a normal phone call/voicemail????? Or does that only work on WeChat?

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 16/05/2022 22:47

I must say I don't use What's App and on WeChat there's a maximum of 60 seconds before it automatically cuts you off so maybe that affects how I feel about them.

mynameiscalypso · 16/05/2022 22:53

I have a friend who sends alternate text messages and voice memos in the same conversation. Normally I'm doing something else while texting which means I can't really listen to my phone at the same time. I just tell her that I've not bothered listening. She then leaves more to wind me up.
