To think she isn't going to get ill from undercooked cake?

Had my niece round and we decided to do some baking together. Standard cupcake recipe self raising flour, caster sugar, butter, couple of eggs.

Well, I didn't bake them for long enough 😫

I didn't realise until it was too late. My niece had two cupcakes, and then I ate one. She didn't say a word/didn't know/didn't notice. I bit into mine and the middle was very mushy moist still and eggy tasting. Definitely undercooked.

DP is now fretting she's going to get ill from that.
Surely not?

I seem to remember munching down on raw cake mix when I was little and it didn't kill me. Is she likely to get an upset stomach from it?

Was going to say the same... cleaning the bowl of the raw cake mix was the best bit of baking.

carefullycourageous · 13/05/2022 21:27

Would she eat a soft boiled egg?

Bluebuddha10 · 13/05/2022 21:27

No she will be fine. We used to lick cake bowls all the time and was never ill. Some people eat raw eggs remember.

enjoyingscience · 13/05/2022 21:27

She’ll be fine! I always let mine lick the bowl, no harm done. Cake mix is delicious.

Smartiepants79 · 13/05/2022 21:28

99.9% sure she’ll be fine.
I love raw cake and slightly undercooked cake! Yum!

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 13/05/2022 21:29

She'll be fine, don't most children (and adults 😁) eat the leftover cake mix from the bowl once the cakes are in the oven?!

Whatonearth0 · 13/05/2022 21:29

Thanks everyone, just as I thought. I'll show this to DP to calm his mind. Only issue here is me not checking the cake was cooked properly and ruining a batch of cupcakes!

It’s the raw flour that’s the risk rather than the egg I believe but I haven’t heard of anyone getting ill from licking out the bowl.

Some things are deliberately underbaked, such as brownies and melting puddings. She’ll be fine.

feellikeanalien · 13/05/2022 21:29

DD always licks the bowl out when we bake. I used to do the same when I was small. Best part of baking as previous pp said.

Raw flour! Just googled, had not heard of this, but see you are right.

You've worried me a bit now. I had no idea raw flour was a risk??

I wonder how common it is for someone to get sick from raw flour. Surely it's extremely rare. I've honestly never heard of that before.

Raw flour isn't a risk.

She'll be totally fine.

GarlicGnocchi · 13/05/2022 21:49

Did you use lion stamped eggs or eggs from some random chicken?

I don;t think the flour the child in this thread ate was raw so this reply does not apply here... but I thought 'bollocks' when I read the raw flour post but when I looked it up it seems not?

GarlicGnocchi · 13/05/2022 21:51

Flour is a risk

I used free range eggs from my local news agents which don't seem to have the lion stamp anywhere on them...

She will be fine. Children have been licking uncooked cake batter from bowls for as long as we’ve been making it! Don’t worry.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 13/05/2022 22:07

Brownies you deliberately leave gooey in the middle. She will be fine.

I don't know if they are allowed to be free range any more coz of bird flu. Or did they let them out again?

pansexualanteater · 13/05/2022 22:13

I've probably licked a cake bowl 10,000 times. Never been sick.

LaLaLouella · 13/05/2022 22:16

She will be absolutely fine - really - don't worry about it! She had a lovely afternoon baking with you and some cake - Win!

Comedycook · 13/05/2022 22:17

Raw flour is a risk...I saw a recipe once for uncooked cookie dough and you had to put the flour in the oven first. I guess to kill whatever it is that's potentially dangerous in it.

However, I really wouldn't worry op...I'm sure she'll be fine. Don't give it any more head space

drspouse · 13/05/2022 22:20

Birds have been let out again!

ODFOx · 13/05/2022 22:25

Let this be a lesson to you OP: you should always eat one or two of every batch while still warm (before icing them ) for quality control purposes.
And no, she won't be ill 😀

SheAndHerAreWomen · 13/05/2022 22:32

Raw cake mixture - the food of gods. Tastes better than the actual cake. She will be fine!
