To have completely forgotten how to make small talk?!

Going to a 'do' for husband's work tomorrow night. He started this role just before the pandemic so I have never met any of his colleagues or their partners. AIBU to be bricking it as I seem to have completely forgotten social norms in these semi-formal situations?!

I feel that way too after lockdown. I tend to trawl the newspapers for any interesting subjects and go with that

Oh I feel your pain. I met my new neighbour and just word vomited about our cats at her, no asking questions about if she's settling in or anything like that. To be fair she was stroking one of the cats at the time but still, I was pretty weird at her.

I've improved a bit but still can't be trusted to sound normal.

Just ask lots of questions? Don't subject them to a 15 minute monologue about your pets while lurking by the bins and you'll be fine!

@CornedBeef451 I feel this so much! And any silences I just fill with rubbish.

@moita I just subjected my sister and her husband to 10 minutes of enthusiastic rambling about my new vacuum cleaner. I think they are pretty clear how much I like it. I remembered to ask questions...I asked what kind of vacuum they have !

I've lost all social awareness and niceties. I caught myself word-vomiting to an acquaintance about my emergency c-section. The look of horror on her face snapped me out of it!

@veronicagoldberg oh my!
