Would you have done the same?

Would you have done the same? Meant to go on my friends 40th bday celebrations abroad in Spain, flying at 2pm for long weekend until Tuesday. Have felt iffy this last week with cough and cold, took LFT’s and negative. Last night developed hot and cold flushes, tingling aching body and woke up covered in sweat as did husband and both feeling groggy with bad head.

He was staying home with two DS’s aged 3.5 and 7. We don’t have help.

When he gets poorly he gets really poorly like bed bound. I cancelled the trip and am now feeling really sorry for myself! Didn’t want to feel poorly away, get worse, expose others or leave my husband poorly with the two DS.
So jealous and upset that I’m not there as haven’t been abroad in ten years. Also wasted £500 😔

Can’t change it now but wondering if my reaction was extreme!!

I would defo have gone if I felt up to it. It's a special occasion and I'm sure your husband would have managed.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/05/2022 11:46

I've have dosed up on meds and gone unless I have covid tbh.

Unless the dc's dad has a significant health problem, I'd expect him to be able tomlooknafter his dc when mildly ill.

PinkWisteria · 06/05/2022 12:29

Having had almost the same run of symptoms and not testing positive until day 4, I think you have done the right thing.

amicissimma · 06/05/2022 12:31

I think you've done the right thing. It would be miserable to be away on a celebratory weekend feeling really under the weather. Presumably your travel insurance covers just this situation.

HilaryBriss · 06/05/2022 13:18

Why have you wwated £500, can't you claim on your travel insurance?

Not sure actually. Doubt it as I only took the insurance out on Monday?

If you were already ill when you took out the insurance then you won't be able to claim. If you weren't already ill, then check the policy info to see if you can claim. I would imagine you'd need some sort of proof of being ill to be able to, so a fit note from your GP, or a positive covid test, but see what your policy says.

Yeah I think that’s the issue and I can’t see anything about it on the policy tbh. Not so bothered about the cost just the experience 😔 keep feeling better then hot sweats again and husband is the same. Things are so bloody unfair! We had Covid on 20th March so we would be pretty unlucky!!

I'm sure your husband would of managed really. I would of gone personally.

Discovereads · 06/05/2022 16:41

I would have stayed home. No one wants a sick person dragging themselves about on a celebration trip. I wouldn’t want to impose on my friends like that. I also wouldn’t have wanted to risk getting worse while being abroad. Yes I always have travel insurance, but the paperwork for actually accessing doctors, hospital and so on is a nightmare. As is the issue of if you become visibly ill, the airline can refuse to let you board the return flight and you then need medical repatriation.

ilovesooty · 06/05/2022 16:45

I'd have done the same thing but I would have felt sorry for myself too.

Hope you recover quickly.

PinkSyCo · 06/05/2022 16:46

Does your DH have an underlying health problem that renders him bed bound every time he feels unwell? If so you couldn’t have gone and left 2 small children in his care so no, your reaction wasn’t extreme. YANBU to feel sorry for yourself though.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 06/05/2022 16:48

You did the right thing. There would be nothing worse for me then being ill in a hot country on a celebration weekend.

HellyR · 06/05/2022 16:52

You did the right thing. Crappy luck for you, op. Hope you can get away when you're better and get your money back.

PurassicJark · 06/05/2022 17:16

@20viona @Stompythedinosaur & @MangoJuice008 why would you all go on a plane and give everyone else your illness? That's very horrible to be honest, ruin everyone else's time by giving them the cold/flu too.

You did the right thing op. You'd have felt horrible going away while sick and wouldn't have enjoyed it.

20viona · 06/05/2022 17:23

@PurassicJark because she might be fine tomorrow there's no saying she's gonna be ill for days. And before covid I can guarantee almost everyone wouldn't think twice about getting on the plane with those symptoms.

He has an overactive immune system and literally everytime he’s poorly he’s really bad. He gets horrific migraines and unbearable temperatures. He isn’t over reacting as he’s a great husband who does alot for us so this is why I was apprehensive!
i have moments of feeling ok and wish I was there! Maybe I’ll get drunk at home instead.. drown my sorrows!!

I would have done the same as you, very disappointing but it can't be helped
Hope you both feel better soon

Eucalyptusbee · 06/05/2022 17:55

I voted YABU because you should have just gone

Willdoitlater · 06/05/2022 18:21

You have done the right thing.

Ducksinthebath · 06/05/2022 18:24

Your poor friend!

EmergencyPaintSituation · 06/05/2022 18:30

Although it’s hard, I think you did the right thing. You have stopped your frievds catching it. You have prevented all those people on the plane catching it. It may be Covid if you haven’t double checked with PCR. That may have had implications for you or others in terms of travel.

m you did the right thing and having hit sweats and feeling I’ll on a plane or hotel is horrible. You wouldn’t have enjoyed it anywhere near as much.

hope you feel better soon and can claim it back. Treat yourself to a nice trip at a later date 💐

Ducksinthebath · 06/05/2022 18:24

Your poor friend!

There’s 11 others so am sure she doesn’t resent me. I didn’t go more for her sake and my other friends so they didn’t catch it and so I wasn’t miserable ruining it for them! Trust me my decision was based mainly on everyone else but me.. I’d have sucked it up, dosed myself up and tried to enjoy it but may not have been popular if I spread it and I worried about DH at home. Maybe I should be more selfish and not care about others as I feel like I’ve massively missed out!
