I speak naturally like janice from friends. very high pitched and I am so embarrassed by it. sometimes I'll try to change my voice and speak lower but it's hard to keep up and ill naturally go back higher.
I know people get annoyed by it and laugh at me for it. how do I deal with this

Speak how you want...if others don't like it they can f*ck off

TheVolturi · 05/05/2022 09:10

You want to change your voice for other people? No, don't do that.

tomatoandherbs · 05/05/2022 09:11

How old are you op?

Topseyt123 · 05/05/2022 09:13

You just speak how you speak. You can't change it really.

Others probably don't pay it the attention you think they do.

ClemDanFango · 05/05/2022 09:17

You tell them to get fucked. Your voice is your voice. If someone is childish enough to laugh at you for it they need to be told in no uncertain terms to fuck right off.

watcherintherye · 05/05/2022 09:23

You just speak how you speak. You can't change it really.

Didn't Margaret Thatcher famously have a voice coach to alter her voice from being high-pitched to lower in tone, as it was thought she would be taken more seriously? I’m sure your voice is just fine op., but if you really want to tweak it, I think that’s what voice coaches do.

ClemDanFango · 05/05/2022 09:35

OP please don’t change such an intrinsic part of yourself to appease other people. Your voice is unique to you and part of who you are.

cookiemonster2468 · 05/05/2022 09:51

As PP have said, your voice is an intrinsic part of who you are, and it will be very hard to change the pitch of your voice even with a lot of coaching.

How do you know that it's 'annoying'? Have people said this to you, or is this just something you think when you hear yourself on recordings? (Nobody likes listening to their own voice)

I would recommend first of all finding a good counsellor and talking through your feelings about this in depth. It's better to come to terms with who you are than try to change yourself.

UseOfWeapons · 05/05/2022 10:06

If it truly bothers you, have you considered a voice coach? I agree with PPs that your voice is an intrinsic part of what makes you, you. However, some people are bothered by aging, or the size of their nose, and seek aesthetic treatment for that, so I don’t think seeking ‘treatment’ for your voice is any different, if that’s something you might want to do?

VelociraptortheClown · 05/05/2022 10:20

If you think your voice is bad, have a listen to Julie Burchill's. That will give you some perspective!

tomatoandherbs · 05/05/2022 10:28

Such patronising responses

yes, people have been very cruel to the op
but she’s obviously very bothered about it and doesn’t like her voice.

should she not be bothered? Absolutely. But then again I should not be bothered when I have a skin flare up. But I am. So I splurge on spot treatments and you know what… when it improves my skin, I feel a whole lot better!

so op - if you are really bothered about this, perhaps approach a voice coach?

LookItsMeAgain · 05/05/2022 11:20

How do you deal with it? If you wanted to, you could try elocution lessons.

Isn't that what they did in "Singin' in the Rain" with Lena Lamont?
Ta-Tay-Tee-Toe-Too

Or you could just not give a shit about what anyone else thinks of your voice, as it's part of you and you move past it.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/05/2022 11:23

Second suggestions of a voice coach if you can afford it, and it's really bothering you. On the flip side, I have the voice of a trucker a low voice. On the phone, people often assume I am a bloke. I am not.

ClemDanFango · 05/05/2022 11:29

@tomatoandherbs piss off.

NeedAnOffSwitch · 05/05/2022 11:36

I'm inclined to agree with @tomatoandherbs
But I say that as a woman in her 40's with the acne of a teen AND a Janice pitch voice. I actively try to lower the pitch when speaking to new people, especially on the phone.

I'm sorry OP. We definitely should not be bothered by this nonsense but we all make changes to ourselves over our lives to fit in even if we don't know we've done it.
