To have posted the letter

Husband and I signed a document that needed to go to local estate agents office. Not massively urgent, a formality really. He put it in an envelope with a stamp on and left it on the counter for a couple of days. I saw it there but didn’t notice what the envelope had written on it.

I was going to high street so thought I’d post it. The estate agent office is literally metres away from the postbox but as the envelope already had a stamp on I thought I would just post it.

today we got an email that they haven’t received the document yet, he knew I had gone to the high street and had taken letter so asked what had happened. I said I posted it and they’ll get it soon. He told me that he had just written the name
of the agent and the company on the envelope rather than writing the full address as he was going to post it straight in their letter box on the door or else take it in person when they were open. The envelope had a stamp on because it was recycled - it was the only a4 size envelope he could find in the house which had been sent to him originally so he wrote the new name on a piece of paper and taped that over his name/our address.

so now we have to ask for the document again to sign and post or drop in again. He thinks It’s my mistake as I should have looked and realised there was no proper address on before posting, and just posted it through the door. I think I was trying to be helpful and the fact it had a stamp on means it looks like it’s ready to post.

who IBU?
yabu -me
yanbu - he

He was BU to leave a stamped envelope on the counter.

You were BU not to notice it didn't have an address on it.

On the whole, he is more unreasonable as it sounds like you're a doer and he's a procrastinator.

Lockheart · 03/05/2022 16:29

You stuck it in the post box rather than walk a few feet to the actual estate agent?

MRex · 03/05/2022 16:30

Neither of you really, it's one of those things. I would have put it in the door rather than postbox though, I'm not really sure why you did that, maybe just an autopilot thing.

billy1966 · 03/05/2022 16:30

OP, unfortunately you are at fault here.
You should have checked.
Sorry!

Mymindisnotmyown · 03/05/2022 16:32

How was it sealed if it was an old envelope?

I would of looked at the front and back just out of habit to make sure it was fit to post.
Also wouldn’t have posted it in a postbox if I was close to the address.

Outafocus · 03/05/2022 16:34

A silly mistake that is slightly inconvenient but easy enough to rectify. Hey ho!

Blueeilidh · 03/05/2022 16:35

Of course you were unreasonable as he hadn't asked you to do it and you didn't look at it properly, if you had it would have been fairly obvious it wasn't ready to be posted

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 03/05/2022 16:38

YABU - why wouldn't you just suck up (what you thought would have been) the cost of a stamp and just give the letter directly to the estate agent if you were so close?
It would have made things so much faster than relying on Royal Mail.

RoseGoldEagle · 03/05/2022 16:39

But even with the stamp on, I’m so confused why you wouldn’t have thought, ‘oh well that may have been his original plan to post it, but I’m right here now so I’ll just pop it through the door so it gets there straight away!’ Either way it’s a minor thing, I think you’re more in the wrong but hopefully something to just shrug over as one of those things!

yesterdaysbread · 03/05/2022 16:41

It was sealed with tape. I probably should have noticed but there’s always more important things occupying my mind that can distract me! As some of you say I should have checked and/or just put the letter straight in the door

YABU for posting a letter without the proper address on it.

catstale · 03/05/2022 16:56

I can't imagine putting something in a postbox when the door is metres away! That's crazy. Things can get lost or delayed in the post. Also why not check the address? We all have things that occupy our minds but that's a pretty basic thing to check.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/05/2022 18:15

I think YABU. You should have the checked the envelope before posting. I understand not realising the stamp was already used but an address is basic thing to check if not being hand delivered...

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/05/2022 18:16

Can they send you another copy?

Harrysutton · 03/05/2022 18:20

Of course YABU. Why on earth didn’t you just pop it into the estate agents?

LightningAndRainbows · 03/05/2022 18:42

I was going to high street so thought I’d post it. The estate agent office is literally metres away from the postbox but as the envelope already had a stamp on I thought I would just post it. why? Was physically too much to walk to the estate agents? The people working in the sorting office aren't sat there twiddling their thumbs. They didn't need that letter driven to the main sorting office to then be sent to the local sorting office to then be driven to the estate agent.

That's fine but if you are too busy to do it properly then don't take the envelope.

dementedpixie · 03/05/2022 18:45

Why on earth would you put it in a postbox when the place it was going was on the same street?

hedgehoglurker · 03/05/2022 18:54

Reverse. Clearly it was unreasonable to post it without the full address.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 03/05/2022 19:12

Course you’re wrong I suspect reverse too .

worraliberty · 04/05/2022 17:13

The estate agent office is literally metres away from the postbox but as the envelope already had a stamp on I thought I would just post it.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've read. Of course YOU are unreasonable.

LemonDrizzleSlice · 04/05/2022 17:15

Your DH did this, didn't he? YABU for posting a reverse.
