To think women's boxing should have 3 minute rounds

Florenz · 01/05/2022 13:21

Having just watched Katie Taylor's fight from last night, it is ridiculous that women's boxing only has 2 minute rounds and also that a world title match is only 10 rounds instead of 12. If we want women's boxing to taken as seriously as mens it should be equal in terms of round length and number of rounds.

It was a great fight btw.

OP posts:

I think that women's boxing should be banned - just as I think that male boxing should be banned. The Romans were very fond of their games at the Colosseum but we are supposed to be more civilised nowadays. Why would you want to watch someone being battered and possibly given brain damage and future dementia, OP?

FabulousFlowerpots · 01/05/2022 13:29

I think it should be banned too. Barbaric.

emuloc · 01/05/2022 13:34

I saw some of the fight on the news this morning. I thought it was horrific, watching two people battering each other. I have never liked boxing. Horrible.

RosesandMoonshine · 01/05/2022 13:34

I remember Germaine Greer talking about this sort of thing, I loved her thoughts about why women see equality as imitating men, rather than having men appreciate and respect women's stuff instead.

Why do men rarely take up female traditional sports and hobbies? It's always the other way around.
It makes a tiny bit more sense in relation to work/positions of power (as our society is structured to protect male power) in the work place but still not what I would call equality.

RosesandMoonshine · 01/05/2022 13:35

Also want to add, i do not mean that hobbies should be gendered at all. Just talking about the culture we already have and how women fit into it.

Blanketpolicy · 01/05/2022 13:36

Tend to agree with pp boxing as a whole should be banned. Will never understand how people can call aiming to punch another person on such a vulnerable part of their body, likely resulting in some level of damage to the brain everytime, sport.

Lunar27 · 01/05/2022 13:36

I'm a man and not a fan of boxing. I confess to appreciating the technical and fitness aspects of boxing/martial arts but it all seems a bit archaic.

Regarding the length of rounds I don't think there's any need to mimic the men's duration and number. It should be based on what's right for the athletes. If that happens to be 12 x 3 minutes then fine but not worth making it any harder than it already is, if it doesn't suit the fitness profiles of those competing.

SinaraSmith · 01/05/2022 13:39

I am a competitive kick boxer. I saw some of the fight and it turned my stomach.

yes we get injured, sometimes bruised or a cut. But we don’t purposely go in the ring to beat the shit out of each other. That’s not the aim. I agree, boxing should be banned.

as for the question in the op, I suppose it depends on the reasons why the rounds are different. Is it based on science and studies of mens and womens bodies? How do female boxers feel about it.

Something for women doesn’t have to be the same as the mens version to be taken seriously. Things can be different and doesn’t make worth less than the mens versions. Why would women need for everything to be exactly the same as mens when our bodies are different.

DeanStockwelllsBunny · 01/05/2022 13:40

For those people that don't like boxing I think it is barbaric that's fair enough everybody is entitled to their opinion however that is not what @Florenz asked.

I agree that men's and women's rounds and length of bouts should be the same you get an awful lot of people ranting on feminist websites about womens equality why not in sport too.
How would it be if the women's 1000 m race was altered to 900m because they couldn't run as far as a man people would be up in arms quite rightly so.

Libertaire · 01/05/2022 13:44

As a fan of the sport, I agree, OP. Women’s boxing has made huge progress over the last decade, culminating in last night’s fight at MSG. The final step towards full equality with men is moving to 12 x 3 minute rounds for world title fights. And yes, women tennis players should also play best of 5 sets at the Slams.

Then it would be the womens 900m race instead.

Equality doesn’t mean we must do everything like men. Why is the mens version the bench mark that womens sport should be measured against?

Eeksteek · 01/05/2022 13:52

I can’t get behind any sport where you win by inflicting a head injury on your opponent. Not an accident, or a by product of winning, but where actual aim is to cause a concussion. I accept there is risk in all sport, but it should be risk, not intention. That’s where the line is for me. I’ve treated lots of head injuries, and I wouldn’t wish one on anyone, of any sex.

HollyFromTheBongs · 01/05/2022 13:53

Boxing is disgusting and ought to be banned for men and women alike. What kind of person enjoys watching people deliberately beating the shit out of one another?

Anyfeckinusername · 01/05/2022 13:56

I didn’t watch the fight, I find it very gruesome watching boxing, but I’m so so glad for Katie Taylor. At 35 she is becoming like the Rocky Balboa of the boxing world. She is the undisputed champion but I felt this tinge of was she being spoken about almost like the underdogs coming into the fight?? The coverage was all about the challenger!

also, I love being the women are gracious about each other in boxing, proud to be in the ring with each other. Good girl Katie!!!! Not my cup of tea but fair focks to her!

Anyfeckinusername · 01/05/2022 13:57

Sorry OP I didn’t actually contribute to your actual question!!! Sorry. I’ve no idea but it interesting to read the thoughts on it here :)

AchatAVendre · 01/05/2022 14:01

Yes, I think it should be levelled up in terms of duration. This is happening in other sports.

The argument that has always puzzled me is that womens' boxing should be banned in case it harms their reproductive organs. Since mens' reproductive organs are outside their bodies, I've never understood in terms of logic why this argument is directed towards women and not men.

Fizbosshoes · 01/05/2022 14:07

I've never understood why the reproductive organs are deemed infinitely more important than the brain in men's boxing (you can't hit "below the belt" because of the risk of injury but knocking someone unconscious, and potentially causing brain damage is within the rules Confused)

CapMarvel · 01/05/2022 14:09

I don't think allowing people an extra minute in which to beat the shit out of each other is really something to aspire to.

RJnomore1 · 01/05/2022 14:15

I love boxing although I haven’t seen this yet, will need to try to find it. Big fan of Katie Taylor.

to answer the question, I’m not sure. It’s not the only sport it happens in - women tennis being the other one that comes to mind. The lower level mens boxing has shorter rounds and less of them but there is an argument for the championship bouts to be equal.

Women can have just as much fitness and stamina as men. The difference is strength which is why they are differentiated. I suspect it’s a hangover from the idea of women being unsuitable for sport due to their fragility?

Libertaire · 01/05/2022 14:18

Credibility.

DropYourSword · 01/05/2022 14:18

The cricket helmet was created something like 100 years after the cricket box was. Shows you exactly what a mans priorities are 🤣

mrshoho · 01/05/2022 14:19

I found that really distressing to watch on the news this morning. I admire Katie for her achievements but all I think when I saw those punches was concussion and future brain injury disease. Boxers wear head protection in the Olympics why can't professional boxers have the same protection?

I don't agree that women's boxing should be levelled up. Females are not physically equal to Men.

Walkingthedog46 · 01/05/2022 14:21

Barbaric and should be banned. It is the only sport where the aim is to beat your opponent into a pulp.

TroysMammy · 01/05/2022 14:22

All boxing should be banned. What type of person derives pleasure from beating someone up. Just sit there for 3 minutes while imagining someone beating you up then you'll realise 3 minutes is a bloody long time.

Notimeforaname · 01/05/2022 14:22

Great fight! katie is a legend. Cant wait to see if the rematch in Croker happens 😃
