Catching the exact same sick bug again?

Going0ut0fMyMind · 30/04/2022 23:26

Posting here for traffic.

My DS brought home a sick bug from school and it has made its way around all of us. Apart from my DS none of us have really been anywhere.

My DH and I (once my DS recovered) tagged teamed taking him to school based on who was currently sick at the time.

my DD came down with it, she was sick a couple of times but then bounced back pretty quickly.

We started giving her a little bit of toast, but then she went downhill again and struggled to even keep down water. So, she barely had anything, even water, for almost 2 days.

Eventually she was able to keep down water, after a while we progressed onto soup, then toast, then other bland food.

She has now been on a proper diet for about a day and she has appeared fine. All of us had recovered. We thought that was it.

However, my DD (who has not left the house at all for over a week) has just been sick again.

Surely this cannot be the sick bug again?

I am just at a complete loss what it could be and what we can do?

Just wanted to add none of us have tested positive for covid, I’m fairly certain it’s not that.

Bump?

Yes, it could easily be the same bug I'm afraid.

How long was she on a bland diet for?

Going0ut0fMyMind · 01/05/2022 06:20

First time round not long as she soon started being sick again.

Second time round after only having soup for 24 hours, we then tried a bit of toast the next day and then stuck to the BRAT diet the rest of the day.

She was absolutely fine and really perked up. Never complained of any sickness.

There’s been a really nasty bug going round where children have been sick and then 3/4 days later been sick again or had an upset stomach. It’s strange as not seen one like this before but it’s swept through our local primary.

Oh really?

DS has been fine since he recovered.

I would try keeping her on a bland diet for a good 48-72 hours. It's easy to jump back to normal foods too quickly when the BRAT diet doesn't make you unwell.

piratehugs · 01/05/2022 06:41

I don't think you can tell if it's the same one or just coincidence. But it certainly feels like the same one. DC2 is on his fourth spell of it in three weeks. The first time, half his class had it. He gave it to DP and DC1 while we were on holiday. Back at school for a few days, now he's got it again and this morning I've woken up with it too.

Thanks, I think this is what we will do.

Horrible bug isn’t it? Just feels never ending.

Brat isn’t recommended by healthcare professionals anymore. Just plenty of fluids and normal diet if your child feels like eating.

We recently had a similar type of bug. DS was really unwell with vomiting, then nothing for a day and then vomiting for a further 3 days. Really weird, but he’s fine again now.

Giraffesandbottom · 01/05/2022 07:20

We all had this recently. It ended up being a different bug, which was obvious after a day or two due to how it presented, but the same bug can reoccur.

rotten luck and very unfair! Hope your daughter feels better

Just confused where she would pick another bug up from when she has barely been out of bed.

Sounds like she hadn't fully recovered.

DingleyDel · 01/05/2022 08:19

We’ve just had a similar bug. Dd had the same symptoms 2 weeks apart and it took a good 3 weeks before dc2 came down with it. Never known anything like it. Noro tends to be explosive for 24 hours then a quick recovery, god knows what this was. Hope she recovers soon.

liveforsummer · 01/05/2022 08:48

Yea this is possible, they can be relentless and have periods of seeming recovery in between. She's likely not re caught the bug, more likely the same one is just coming in waves.

Teacupsandtoast · 01/05/2022 08:51

Sick bugs can often disappear for a day or two then you get another day or two of random spews. Hope she feels better soon

EmeraldShamrock1 · 01/05/2022 08:53

My DS had it twice.
The first for 3 days.
Another a week later for 2days.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/05/2022 08:54

This happened to me all the time.

Our sink is next to the toilet. I now put my toothbrush in a drawer when I’ve finished using it, and I’ve stopped getting repeated attacks.

l read that toothbrushes are quite often a cause if repeated tummy upsets, especially if used near a loo.

Going0ut0fMyMind · 01/05/2022 08:54

Thanks everyone, she has perked right up again.

Such a weird bug.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 01/05/2022 09:51

Thankfully the 2nd sickness is a little milder.

BrightonBunny · 01/05/2022 10:09

I was also going to ask about toothbrushes.

I always replace mine if anyone has sickness.

LookUnderTheLargeMilk · 01/05/2022 10:11

My children had gastric symptoms with covid (sickness mostly).

Glad your DD perked up.

abyssofwoah · 01/05/2022 10:14

Yeah we had something similar. Sick bug we all got. DC1 sick through one night, fine for 5 days and then sick again for 2 days.
