To be scared of WW3

Bluerose77 · 28/04/2022 19:25

I dont watch the news, mainly because I have a nervous disposition. But I was looking at some You tube stuff and I caught the latest headline from Putin threatening nuclear weapons on any country supporting Ukraine. I know Biden wants to send more weapons as we are already doing.

Will this be IT do you think. I'm so frightened now about where all this is leading. Please help me calm down.

I think the world has been a lot closer to WW3/nuclear war before now and always managed to avoid it.

Putin is in a very weak position and needs to appear strong, so sabre rattling and hints of WW3/escalation are mostly Russia scraping the barrel for ways to appear tough on the world stage.

Bluerose77 · 28/04/2022 19:30

But I fear he'll feel backed into a corner and then just lash out.

@Bluerose77 At the end of the day, a nuclear war is mutual destruction for every one and there is nothing you can do about it. No country in the world have the capability to stop missiles that travel at the speed they are deployed. So if one country fires every one else will.

There is zero you can do about it, so live your life and stop worrying about the what if and focus on what you have now. Every one hopes it will not happen, but just be glad you live life in a bubble in the west where you do not have to face daily horrors these poor people face on a daily basis

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 28/04/2022 19:44

What's the point in fearing it?

All the world leaders will be willy waggling, making threats and doing whatever they are planning anyways. Us mere normal people won't have any control over it at all.

Even if we are going to get blown up (which wouldn't be the whole UK anyways, they would need about 200 nukes to kill the whole of the UK) what a waste of time spending your last week's worrying about it?

Turn off the news, turn off YouTube and the world will seem a much brighter place.

Rococococo · 28/04/2022 19:53

Putin has explicitly threatened to nuke the UK. Not the USA or the west in general. His reason for singling us out was the reckless comments some of our politicians have made about arming Ukraine - it’s been interpreted by Russia as us openly saying we’re involved in the war against them.

Since all of this started, some commentators have speculated that Putin might order a tactical nuclear strike. This would be one of the smaller nukes and would ‘only’ devastate a relatively small area as opposed to launching a full scale nuclear war. The purpose would be to shock the world and make it clear that Russia really is prepared to use nuclear weapons rather than just threaten.

im starting to wonder whether we in the UK are being lined up as this tactical nuclear target.

itsgettingweird · 28/04/2022 20:01

He's threatened it many times before.

The thing that makes me more worried right now that he may attempt is is that he does appear ill as rumours say and so he may feel he has nothing to lose or it be his parting shot.

However ...... I think because that is why he'll make the call it won't actually happen because those he's instructing will be able to ignore his instruction.

I agree with above poster we've been very close before, closer than we are now, and I actually think we've always has this threat in the world.

ChristmasCurry · 28/04/2022 20:06

If Putin used tactical nuclear weapon on the UK, the 200 odd we would fire back at Russia should finish him off for good.

Throwawaytoday · 28/04/2022 20:09

The thing I tell myself is that nothing has changed (for us, obv it's changed for people bin Ukraine, and Russia).

Putin has always had nuclear weapons.

He's always been at loggerheads with western ideology.

He's been slowly annexing and taking over neighbouring non NATO states for years.

His weapons have been on Level 2 readiness before.

It's just an escalation of words. Nothing has changed.

Favourodds · 28/04/2022 20:11

You are being unreasonable for starting another thread about this.

Can't there be a COVID style WW3 thread so the, frankly, abysmal military insights of anxious Mumsnetters can be contained?

CrunchyCarrot · 28/04/2022 20:14

I think that even if Putin does (for example) nuke the UK, that will still not precipitate WW3. What it will cause is NATO to take very strong action against Russia and Putin in particular, and shut the whole thing down. I do not think any more nuclear attacks from Russia would follow. Of course it will be tragic for whoever is targeted in that strike, but I don't think it would carry on to further escalation in a nuclear sense. Russia is out-gunned if he takes on other countries, the nuke thing is a bully-boy tactic, but it's wearing a bit thin now.

Rococococo · 28/04/2022 20:17

Just hide the thread 🙄

Rococococo · 28/04/2022 20:18

Sorry, that was to favourall

sonjadog · 28/04/2022 20:18

Of course Putin is going to make these threats. He is hardly going to respond to the news of weapons mean provided to the other side with "Oh, okay then, fair enough". These responses are not as dramatic and awful as they sound.

No what’s unreasonable is someone asking for reassurance and understanding on a subject and you commenting a unnecessary comment if you don’t like the subject don’t read the thread!!

Astrak · 28/04/2022 20:25

Given that I have no control over Mr Putin's thoughts or actions I minimise my tendency to catastrophise by strictly limiting my information intake. I check the BBC website once a day for a maximum of ten minutes for updates.
I have sent as much money as I can afford, together with requested goods to Ukraine when the war began. When I can afford it, I will provide more money and requested items.
It feels like Mr Putin's toxic actions are magnified by responding to his threats and actions with attention towards him. I think his mental state is likely to be blatantly deranged. I'm not in a position to alter that. All I can do is support the survivors to the best of my ability.

SagaNorenLansrimMalmo · 28/04/2022 20:30

I wouldn’t - we’ll be dead before we even really know it’s started

TheVolturi · 28/04/2022 20:30

I was going to start worrying about this too but ahhhh fuck it! If we get nuked it will be over in seconds we will know nothing about it.

But that depends where in the UK you live. It's the fear immediately before it starts that I think about.

Exactly this. I say let's get in their first before we're all nuked, got absolutely nothing to lose.

lightand · 28/04/2022 20:37

I feel like I am too long in the tooth to bother going through being bothered by this sort of thing.

Not sure if that helps you.
But for some of us, maybe I am being too blase, but it is same old same old. Since 1970s at least.

lightand · 28/04/2022 20:38

Just cant see this time around being anything specially different tbh.
