Sorry but I couldn't find a thread about this anywhere even using various search options.

Tonight I am remembering Claudine Chicheportiche of Bou, Algeria who was murdered at Auschwitz, Poland in 1943 aged 16. RIP sweet girl, you are not forgotten x

I'm so sad to see no replies here. I had to join up just to post! I lit candles tonight in memory of 2 precious souls who were murdered in the Holocaust. May they never be forgotten and may we never forget the horrors of all those that suffered then and now.

FourChimneys · 28/04/2022 22:20

Maybe a lot of people are like me and don't feel the need to post about it online. As it happens I have reasons to remember but it isn't going to help them now if I put their name(s) on here.

AbsoluteYawns · 28/04/2022 22:23

I believe the whole yellow candle initiative is to post about it online. Everyone should do what they feel is best to remember.

TickledOnion · 28/04/2022 22:39

Sorry you’ve had no response.
We lit yellow candles in memory of Sarah Allegro of Belgium who perished at Auschwitz, age 37 and Salomon Arditti of Bulgaria who was murdered at Auschwitz, age 64.
My whole Facebook page was lit up with yellow candles which I thought was very moving and many of my non-Jewish friends liked or commented.
I talked with my DC about how important it is to remember. Maybe the yellow candle is a social media gimmick but it made us stop and think about it today.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2022 22:46

I've never heard of Yellow candle, what is it?

MooseBreath · 28/04/2022 22:52

I am Jewish. My family was lucky enough to have left Europe (mainly Russia) before the Holocaust, though many of my relatives' friends and extended family were lost. I don't know their names. The candle initiative is lovely, but it was long enough ago now that most people no longer know those who were involved.

JuicyBuffersElasticNut · 28/04/2022 22:56

May her memory be a blessing.

May HaShem avenge her blood.

@Toddlerteaplease it's an initiative to remember Holocaust victims on Holocaust remembrance day. Each candle is lit for a person. We got a little card with each tin saying who it was for, their age place where they were from and sadly the place where they were murdered.

We remember the named people as well as all those who perished; all those whos names were not noted down.

The memorial candles burn for about a day and once the tin is empty there are sunflower seeds to plant using the tin which is another really beautiful idea to keep their memory alive.

I was devastated by the candles I got for a one year old and a 4 year old. Every life lost is so awful but that mindless murder of such innocents breaks my heart.

Davros · 28/04/2022 23:26

I thought holocaust Remembrance Day was 27th January

BrylcreamBeret · 28/04/2022 23:31

Me too Davros and now I feel like an arsehole.

Dilbertian · 28/04/2022 23:38

Today was established as Holocaust Remembrance Day by Israel in the 50s, and ever since then it has been the day on which Jews worldwide commemorate the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust.

The UK government set the January date as the national date for commemoration in the early 2000s. Many Jews observe both dates.

RaininSummer · 28/04/2022 23:42

I have never heard of this. Very moving.

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/04/2022 23:52

First I'm hearing of this. How do you get the candles etc? And hearing of a 1yo and 4yo is heartbreaking 💔

AbsoluteYawns · 29/04/2022 00:00

Yes it's so moving.
You can get a candle from www.yellowcandleuk.org and the website explains the initiative. It's relatively new to me too but I mark it each year now.
