cos I dont want to go and play happy families with dhs family.
If the wedding {registry office) is at 2pm followed by meal and reception closeby would it be ok to leave around 6.30pm, 7pm. Do you think the meal will be over by then? so we can just sneak off.

Its a punk wedding so its all mohawks and leather and really drunk ,off their faces guests (who are all really nice people, just not my idea of a night out)
Dh and I dont want to go but cos its family and all that bullshit then its easier to just go. I just dont want to offend the bride and groom cos I really like them, just cant be arsed with the rest of his family, actually I can probably handle most of them but not the mil.

So AIBU to leave the wedding at that time.

I don't see why you shouldn't leave straight after the meal.

It should be fine to leave then.

Have one drink after dinner and a quick chat with bride and groom to be polite, then go.

p.s. Punk wedding sounds cool! I went to a Druid wedding once (totally different, I know, but off the wall in the same kind of way). one of the best weddings I have ever been to!

Having children is always a good excuse to get out of social functions early/not go at all, just use them as the excuse as necessary.

If you get on with the bride and groom then I think you just have to accept that it's not your thing and just go with the flow. After all, it's their day and they clearly want you there.

I'd much rather be at a punk rock wedding than a strict, conservative one where elderly relatives scowl at you if you get up to dance. I would never dream of leaving early however even if I didn't like it. I'd put up because it's only one day out of your life and a day that the bride and groom will never have again, so make it special for them. They probably appreciate that it's not your thing and will be even more grateful to see you there making an effort.

I'm not saying stay until 2am, but if you are invited to the reception then I'd stay for an extra hour or so after the meal at least.

Have the meal, then wait an hour or so before you leave.. enough time to talk with the B&G without seeming rude.

Good for them for having a wedding they will really enjoy.

I would have a fantastic time and leave at seven if its not your thing, saying yu want to put the kids to bed. I agree with the others that if you like them and vice versa you should make an effort. Sounds like a MIL's nightmare wedding so you never know she may leave early herself!
