Good morning

I started a new job at the beginning of March, within a week I got viral gastroenteritis which was so severe I got an umbilical hernia.

I went back to work and within 2 days tested positive and subsequently each of my 4 children took ages to catch it so they told me not to come in and they’d pay me until we were all clear.

I ended up in hospital just before I was due back with my hernia needing surgery.

I am just so wiped and run down I can’t physically go back but I’m scared will this be ok

Sorry to hear you’ve been unwell OP and it all sounds genuine and beyond your control. But no one here can tell you if this is “okay” WRT your employer. Do you know their absence policies eg how much paid sick leave you are entitled to/how long you need to be working before you can get it? Is there an HR person you can speak to? I’m not sure of the legal ins and outs but citizens advice could probably advise. Good luck - sounds like you’ve had a rubbish time through no fault of your own Flowers

If you worked where I work it would be fine. Other places it wouldn’t.

why not call and have a frank chat?

Again, I understand why you're scared, but we can't tell you whether your employer are gong to be okay with this or not?

Did you offer to go in while you/your children where positive and they asked you to stay away and would pay you anyway?

The best thing to do would be to have a chat with your manager and HR. If you have sicknotes/drs notes for the post-surgery period, get those submitted and be clear with them about what timescales you are looking at for a return and whether you will need any adjusted duties short term.
