A lot of people worry about being outed on here. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience of it, and what were the consequences?

Well there was an AMA thread earlier today that certainly had the scope to out someone quite comprehensively.

I made some comments about my inlaw's family and the next thing I know it is all over the tabloid press and we are persona non grata

Yeah that one was pretty bad! 😬

Yes! A while back on an old account I posted on quite a controversial subject. Ended up being around 35 pages of people basically questioning, accusing, judging and belittling me. Turns out someone on here had worked out who I was posting about and the quandary I had with them. Showed her the post, comments etc and it all kicked off big time. I haven't spoken to her or her family in well over a year

Never been outed personally but I have identified a close friend on a thread before, just the details she posted about the area we live in and her family life.

Not myself, but I have sussed someone I know in RL and the amount of bollocks she talks on here is shocking. Most of it is pure fantasy but with enough real info (including the area she comes from) in to recognise her. It hasn't made me feel anything else other than sad for her as she obviously uses MN as an outlet of some sort. She cropped up in one post about household incomes and has made out her and her DH earn a fortune and own their home outright when I know it's nowhere near the truth. This is a great reminder to never beat yourself up over those kind of threads.

I had a thread taken by the DM. It was about an incident that I had told others about but on the thread here, I revealed very personal and private information about my past to explain my POV.

A couple of people in real life saw it on the DM, came on to MN and now know very personal things about me I wish they didn’t.
