HELP!! How do I get rid of the smell and are the fumes going to hurt my 1 and 4 year old? Has anyone experienced this. How did it end? Tell me it ended!

In 2005 I smashed a bottle of TCP in the cupboard, it fell off the shelf in the middle of the night and had chance to soak into the floorboards.

Unfortunately the heating pipes run under the cupboard floor so twice a day every day since if I open the cupboard whilst the heating is on I get treated to the unmistakable whiff of TCP.

I am resigned to the fact that's it's never going away until I remove the floorboards!

Happy cleaning OP!

Good luck!

I smashed rose water and it smelled for ages and that’s not even as bad as TCP. We had tiles as well, did it soak in to anything?

Open windows and start scrubbing floor. Buy lemon and rub it into floor should get rid of the smell, maybe!

FelicityPike · 21/04/2022 12:36

You need to set fire to your kitchen.
Sorry.

Hugasauras · 21/04/2022 12:39

One spilled in our cupboard when I was a kid and it smelled like TCP forever. You kind of get used to it!

JuneOsborne · 21/04/2022 12:41

Air is the key if all of the actual TCP has been cleaned up. You could cover the floor in bicarb too. And just keep on cleaning! Lemon is a good shout too.

I'm sure the kids will be fine, just ventilate every room and keep them out of the kitchen.

It's a one of a kind smell, isn't it?

miamiaow · 21/04/2022 12:43

The smell of tcp won’t harm them.

I had to clean my infected c section wound with diluted tcp for weeks.

One day, I thought I was being clever diluting it while holding my wriggly baby.

Spilled it all over the carpet.

She’s 20 months old now and it still smells no matter what I do.

Cornettoninja · 21/04/2022 12:48

Pour zoflora on it?

*disclaimer - this may make it worse

faw2009 · 21/04/2022 13:16

Wow, I love TCP. I used to love opening the bottle and having a quick smell of it when I was a kid. Sometimes still do!

Sorry.

I was going to suggest burning the house down. Or moving.

TCP lasts forever. Like spilled glitter. You have to learn to live with it now.

Allywill · 21/04/2022 14:35

It has a half life of about 50 years. You will get used to the smell. (And it won’t do you or anyone else any harm)

Donna1001 · 21/04/2022 15:00

You could try this

pongone.co.uk/product/pongone-household/

it claims to remove all smells. I used to get rid of the smell of urine from a carpet. It was well ingrained, & professionally cleaning the carpet twice didn’t remove it. This did though.

DrCoconut · 21/04/2022 23:34

Ooh don't get rid of it. TCP smells heavenly. And tastes good too.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/04/2022 23:35

It will always smell clean.
