DH has been an absolute gem/rock/delight for near on 18 months now with a whole heap of shit going on on my side. I've been through the mill and he has been so supportive, kind, loving, affectionate and just down right perfect. Because if everything going on I've been so far from that. At times I've been snappy, exhausted, miserable and have spent far too many nights droning on and on about the various ins and outs of everything.

We get very little child free time but a very dear friend has offered to have DS4 for the day and I haven't told DH! I almost feel mean as we're so desperate for time off but I really want to surprise him. We could just have a nap and a snuggle, go out for lunch, go for a walk etc but for some reason I really feel like it'd be fun to do something fun together. Feel like big kids again. We are big kids, who laugh a lot together and I think it would be really nice to do something of that ilk next weekend.

Were based near Shrewsbury so happy to travel an hour away, maybe a bit further. Don't want to spend mega amounts. Any suggestions? Sorry for the massive preamble, suppose I just wanted to say how great he is and how much he deserves a day of fun! Any suggestions would be really appreciated as I'm drawing blanks. He's not the type for water stuff (unless boat related) and not overly sporty but is game for pretty much everything else I'd say.

Zip world in north wales, if that isn’t too far? Loads of fun and something a bit different!
Also can I just say…your post is lovely and a breath of fresh air compared to the usual husband posts in here 🥰 hope you enjoy your day together x

Notimeforaname · 21/04/2022 00:45

Ah this is lovely. I'm in Ireland so cant help at all 😆but dying to know what you choose!
I hope you both have a lovely day whatever you do.

I'm avidly following this thread hoping for ideas. I'm another one with a husband who is a gem. He's not perfect (who is? Certainly not me!), but I've had a few crap years culminating in breast cancer and he has been an absolute rock. He gives me a shoulder to cry on, is always ready with a hug when I need it, is currently doing 100% of the cooking and housework, was amazingly sensitive and reassuring as I cried over my missing boob and he deserves to have some fun!

Don’t go too far. If you have one day free you don’t want to waste it sat in a car.

Escape room?
would only take an hour or so. Then you could do a nice walk and go for a cocktail and to a non family friendly restaurant for lunch.

Bike riding - would it be possible to hire electric bikes anywhere near? That would be fun if you’ve never done it before

DrierThanANunsNasty · 21/04/2022 06:03

Segway
Trampolining
Go karts/driving day
Find an adventure centre near you that does stuff like axe throwing
Escape room
Zip lining or a go ape type thing
Rafting/kayaking/paddle boarding
Picnic somewhere beautiful nearby
Build a fort in the living room and play games
Scavenger hunt

All things I’ve done for my absolute rock of a DH for birthdays etc. We very much prefer adventures and experiences over physical items as gifts.

Also look on experience day sites for inspiration of what’s near you too.

Zip world or forest coaster if you are willing to travel to Wales. My husband and I went zorbing once which was great fun. Child free leisurely pub lunch seems a must.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/04/2022 06:21

Day at home, meals in bed, bottle of bubbly and box set when you’re not otherwise engaged 😃

litlealligator · 21/04/2022 07:38

For my husband's last birthday I got him an offroad driving course and he loved it. I was allowed to sit in the back so was just in there giggling, we had a brilliant time then went out for a nice lunch. It was really different and a fun activity to do together.

I got DH a mystery picnic, they have them all over the country but I've just looked up where Shrewsbury is and there are a few in the vicinity - Ludlow in Shropshire is one but there may be others closer to you.

Anyway it's a sort of guided walk around town picking up bits of your picnic from different little delis and independent places. We're doing ours in St Andrews 😊

Hope you have a good day whatever you do!

Sorry forgot the link!

Honestly? Book a nice place for lunch and then a walk after
No experience, no hassle, just nice food, company and fresh air

Sorry for the radio silence, DS has come down with Chicken Pox, plumbers here all day and MIL and DSS have arrived! It seems our day off may not go ahead but we will see! Thank you so much for all the ideas. I really like the sound of a picnic (weather depending). We've never been to zip world either. The caverns and Forest coaster look good too. It's lovely to hear about all the other wonderful DH's too. We're very lucky!
