To not eat the BBQ food after...

...witnessing the hosts poor food hygiene?

The nice weather this weekend has meant I have been invited to the first BBQ of the year...happy days! Or it was until I saw the host pull the chicken fillets out of the fridge and pierce the packet open with a knife and then put the knife back in the drawer😱🤮 They then took the chicken out of the packet and put onto the BBQ and trickled some water over their hands - no soap! - and have just put some cutlery on the table from the same drawer they put the knife back into. I'm suddenly not feeling hungry now.

WIBU to make up an excuse to leave? Or suck it up and hope I don't end up with the shits?

Oo that would put me right off! Could you fake being a veggie and just say you're having a month off meat to trial it? Or to be honest I don't think I could have held myself back when they returned the knife to the drawer- I'd have probably snapped 'you best wash that!' I'm relatively outspoken though! Or just drink red wine with it, apparently helps kill a few germs, old wives tale Grin

Violetmo0n · 16/04/2022 16:25

I would have said what you doing putting that back in there.
It would put me off tbh.
If your drinking just say you've lost your appetite and would rather drink.

FabFitFifties · 16/04/2022 16:29

I'd probably still eat, well cooked food, but they are minger.

NovemberRain2 · 16/04/2022 16:34

Was it plain chicken fillets they took straight out of the packet and onto the bbq? If so, I'd leave on the basis that the food sounds bland as fuck.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:37

Oh no.

This is why I prefer to be the host at a BBQ, for the most part. I know that my food hygiene is impeccable!

Good point! Plain chicken breast in the BBQ! Envy

YANBU

Given their awful food hygiene I wouldn’t trust the veggie food either tbh, likely to be contaminated if they can’t be arsed washing their hands after handling raw chicken

alilstressed · 16/04/2022 16:39

I'm also thinking that the chicken was neither washed or seasoned before going on the grill!

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:41

You shouldn't wash chicken - doesn’t need it and you are more likely to contaminate your kitchen.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:42

(Although it is contentious. I’ve never bothered.)

Wash chicken?

I don't think so!

You shouldn't wash raw chicken as it potentially then spreads bacteria all over your kitchen.
YukoandHiro · 16/04/2022 16:45

Eurgh that's grim. I couldn't eat after seeing that

SummerHouse · 16/04/2022 16:47

This would have my contamination radar going off. I would still eat it all though as I also have issues with politeness. It's a terrible tightrope to live on.

OfstedOffred · 16/04/2022 16:48

Oh god I wouldn't have even noticed.

We are too germ obsessed these days.

alilstressed · 16/04/2022 16:48

Washing/cleaning meat before seasoning is contentious for some but not, if like me, you are from a Caribbean background.

SpinningMeSoftly · 16/04/2022 16:48

Ah yes, the joy of raw chicken BBQs with extra chicken juice splashed around the sides and used as a salad dressing and wiped onto tea towels, dish cloths and napkins. Lovely.

SummerHouse · 16/04/2022 16:49

Yes, and don't wash the chicken. Radar going off again!

Hoppyspring · 16/04/2022 16:49

I wouldn't have a problem with the chicken but I'd eat it with my fingers & drink lots of alcohol just in case!

RunnerDuck2020 · 16/04/2022 16:49

Never eat chicken from a BBQ! 😂

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:51

@alilstressed that’s fair enough! I know that in Korean/Japanese cooking (which I’m more familiar with) they also wash/rinse/soak meat. I’m sure it’s like anything else - if you do it carefully and well it’s perfectly safe it’s just that so many people don’t seem to understand how to do things carefully/safely.

Same, it wouldn't particularly bother me if I had noticed.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:52

I want chicken now. NOT cooked by the person in question, mind...

This. You'd have been fine OP. To be honest if a guest came to my house and sat there judging my hygiene when I was offering them hospitality I'd rather they left though.

Does bacteria behave differently depending on your background though?
