Garden Accident Waiting To Happen

Aibu - we have a slope down at the end of our garden to an uneven decking that is raised approx 1.5 foot above lawn level. My 1 year old loves running up and down the garden and my wife is defensively adamant he would never trip running downhill but I want to fix it so it is a bit more level or put plant pots in front of the decking. She says it's just life and he could get hurt anywhere...but is it not right to mitigate risk where we see it instead of ignoring it until an accident happens? Aibu for worrying?

Confused

What is the problem, the step up to the decking or the slope? Just level it, or change the deck to lawn level, no need for dramatic confrontations.

The slope, as my worry is he might run too fast and fall into the raised decking. From stand-still the decking isn't an issue really.

I want to just level it as you say but the OH doesn't see the need for us to do anything as it's just life that kids fall and sometimes crack heads

Yeah kids do fall, but it's nice to do what you can to minimise the risk isn't it!

I’d attempt to change it, but that’s based on my 3yo: two left feet and a zest for danger. A less gung-ho DC might not see the slope and jump onto the decking as “challenge accepted”.

Could you just put some soft padding along the edge of the decking? I can't imagine your wife would complain at that.
