To have a hobby usually shared by much much younger people?

I have recently got into a hobby. I have kids and not much free time so wanted something easy I could get into, and it's something I was doing at uni as well (think something along the lines of film club, but the target audience is pretty narrow)... Turns out most people who are into it are at uni (still), and I am probably 10/15 years older than most people I chatted to, everyone is younger and single so lots of chat I do not participate in.

I have not been really self conscious about it, I don't ask anyone their age nor do I reveal mine, but someone is organising a meet-up during another bigger event and a lot of people from this particular forum will be attending. I was chatting to two people and one asked me if I would be coming and I mentioned that I was not sure as the big event runs over 3 days and I would need to sort out childcare for that particular day the meet up is. A super awkward silence followed and then they left the chat 🤣🤣🤣, like they suddenly realised we were not in early 20s.
I am in my mid 30s and never felt really old, until now.
Not sure what the point of this is except that I should probably buying myself a coffin as I'm so old?
Do I need something different to do with my time?(Probably yes!). What do people in their 30s/40s do for fun?

Those people are weird! Talking about having kids and needing childcare is hardly only relevant to those in their 30s anyway! If it’s something you enjoy then please don’t let this one person put you off!

Boxowine · 15/04/2022 16:46

Morris Dancing?

InsomniacVampire · 15/04/2022 16:51

@RoseGoldEagle Thank you!
I think it just put me off socialising... which I really wanted to do but now I just feel like... maybe it was not the best idea and I'll end up going and lurking from the distance haha.

What is the hobby?

axolotlfloof · 15/04/2022 18:31

Maybe they fancied you (virtually) so that was why they felt awkward.
Don't be put off, you may find there are others your age (you're not old) in real life.

BeefSupreme · 15/04/2022 18:33

Is it skateboarding?

Hankunamatata · 15/04/2022 18:36

Perhaps they thought you were a early 20s with kids 🤷‍♀️

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/04/2022 18:39

I have similar sometimes and I really like it! I get to live vicariously with their lie-ins and impromptu trips everywhere, and I feel like a proper adult with my mortgage and Sainsbury’s weekday pass. Win win Grin

Momicrone · 15/04/2022 18:41

Lego?

AmyandPhilipfan · 15/04/2022 18:42

I used to have the opposite and joined a knitting group in my 20s and was the youngest by miles!

Chouetted · 15/04/2022 18:42

Anime?

They'll get used to it, it does feel half a lifetime away to them though (which it is, in a way...)

QueenofLouisiana · 15/04/2022 18:45

I have the opposite problem, my hobby group is populated by women 15 years older then me (at least). Feels a bit strange, but we focus on the hobby and the techniques we are using, rather than their retirement or my parenting teens issues.

saveforthat · 15/04/2022 18:45

These threads always turn into everyone asking what the hobby is. Why the mystery?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/04/2022 18:47

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/04/2022 18:47

Ahhh the elusive secret hobby. Why can't people just say what their hobby is.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/04/2022 18:47

Anime society? DS has just joined one and has the opposite problem of being a bit too young for a lot of the meetings (tend to be in pubs at about 9pm). They're all pretty nice though, and I'm sure they'd welcome you.

CoralPaperweight · 15/04/2022 18:48

Sci-fi / fantasy conventions

Cauliflowersqueeze · 15/04/2022 18:49

A woman I work with who is probably 47 or 48 goes out to play on her bike at a bike park and absolutely loves it. She’s surrounded by teens and people in their 20s and couldn’t give a shit. She loves it. I’m so impressed by her! She asked me if I had a bike that I played on. I don’t.

NinjaQueen · 15/04/2022 19:08

Dying to know the hobby.

I think they were behaving oddly, regardless your age I think saying you have to sort childcare is a normal thing for an adult and can't see why it was cause that reaction.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2022 19:13

Your hobby is :

Groupie with the 'Peppa Pig Roadshow'

(I think)

InsomniacVampire · 15/04/2022 19:14

My money is on Anime... or are you a furry?

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/04/2022 19:15

I’m just here to find out what the hobby is

XenoBitch · 15/04/2022 19:16

I am in my 40s and love this stuff too. I am going to a convention in the summer with someone almost half my age. Zero fucks given by either of us.
You enjoy what you enjoy.

InsomniacVampire · 15/04/2022 19:18

It was not meant to be a mystery but I am now embarassed thinking of it even lol.
