In an old bucket with diluted bleach? You can even buy cheap new orange buckets for about £6 in b&q I think ?

Yes I probably have an old bucket somewhere... I hope.

Have to do it tonight though or DH will probably put it in the bath or dishwasher (yuk!)

Toilet plunger/brush dya mean? Stand it in the loo pan and flush cistern water over it several times? Use a bleach solution in the pan and leave to soak?
Ditch it if really really gross. Wrap in newspaper & bin it.
Buy new at B&M Bargains. 50p.
Buy several replacements if you think it wise.
Alternatively…
If you mean a plunger with a rubber thingy on the end that clears a sink drain hole, wash under running water and flush with bleach. Put aside to dry.
