Thoughts on this?

Big power off? Are you switching off?

It’s the fourth different date/time that I’ve seen.

….was last Sunday. And no, I didn’t join in. The only people who will be inconvenienced are those flicking the switch.

iamsoreadyforbednow · 12/04/2022 07:27

Will it actually do anything or is it just a waste of time?

Someone I spoke to mentioned if enough people turn off then it could cause an imbalance on the grid? Whatever that would entail..

Waste of time.

Antarcticant · 12/04/2022 07:30

The inconvenience of some people losing their electricity while it was sorted out.

User843976 · 12/04/2022 07:31

Waste of time but you switch yours off if you want OP, maybe you could pose for a photo in front of the masterswitch like people do.

LoudingVoice · 12/04/2022 07:32

I thought this had already happened!

twinklystar23 · 12/04/2022 07:35

I would do though not sure what it would achieve?

iamsoreadyforbednow · 12/04/2022 07:36

@User843976 🤣 I like your style. I can really see myself in the daily fail posing by the fuse box..

It’s not something I’ll be partaking in. I don’t see the point, however my siblings are very much against me on this hence why I wanted some more insight/opinions so I know I’m not being (too) narrow minded about it. I just don’t see the point.

There’s been so many dates. If there was one actual date and everyone did it it might make a difference, but not some like this.

RoseAndRose · 12/04/2022 07:40

Loads of different dates, so I think it's not really caught on. All a bit half-arsed really

It wasn't a serious/major part of the much wider Spanish protests (such as it existed at all) in the first place.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 12/04/2022 07:41

Domestic use is much smaller than commercial. Given only a relatively small number of people would do it and they'd all be doing it on different dates I don't really see what the point is - I'm also not sure what it is actually trying to achieve? It's not going to "stick it to the man" if we all go without for a few hours (but may ruin your freezer food). It makes no sense to me.

User0610134049 · 12/04/2022 07:42

Stupid Facebook chain Mail copy and paste sharing thing. A load of rubbish I’m afraid

MasterGland · 12/04/2022 07:43

It's pointless. What would really inconvenience the energy companies is people becoming self-sufficient. As battery technology develops it is becoming more likely that, with solar tiles and a small wind turbine, you could provide for yourself. Now that would set the cat amongst the pigeons.

SandyDays · 12/04/2022 07:45

I can't understand what the point would be - don't we all turn nearly all our electric off every night anyway?

Mirrorball2022 · 12/04/2022 07:47

There was a date it was Sunday and I think they are now doing more. Saw kids of tweets about it Sunday evening.

I’m all for doing things to help but does this really do anything but make everyone sit in the dark with everything else off? Surely there is just a power surge afterwards but then is that the point?

I think we could turn the power off for a day and this government wouldn’t give a shit. What about the gas? That’s the really expensive increase isn’t it? Also not everyone is on social media and won’t have a clue.

10pm last sunday lots already in bed, low power use anyway. 7pm many still getting home from work or activities and getting kids sorted for bed/baths and it’s probably too much of an inconvenience ( I get that’s the point but people will be busy and forget).

It’s actually not chain mail type post it’s a real thing happening. It’s happened across social media and one did occur on Sunday at ten. Loads tweeting and sharing post on Instagram not just Facebook. People in Spain did it so now it’s been caught in over here.

I have friends who work in the NG control room. We went for a drink at the weekend and they were laughing at the idea that people turning their lights off would cause them any issues at all. It is literally some people's job to balance the grid 24/7. There are imbalances to bring back all the time.
Bubbles1st · 12/04/2022 07:50

Just called going to bed in our house, we do it everyday.

Shiningpath · 12/04/2022 07:52

Honestly, a big gust of wind causes an imbalance in the Grid. As a PP said, it happens all the time, so much so that 24/7 people are working to deal with short and longer term imbalances.

UserError012345 · 12/04/2022 07:53

No I don't think I would do it. I like the idea & I agree we need to do something but I'm not sure this it. I don't have an alternatives.

Shiningpath · 12/04/2022 08:19

I should point out as well, energy providers buy months and sometimes years in advance from generators. If you ‘cost’ them now, who do you think actually pays down the line? Consumers, that’s who.

User843976 · 12/04/2022 09:23

Extra costs just put the standing charge up so consumers pay more

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2022 09:34

Impact shareholders profit? I bet that's mostly pension funds. Gee, thanks for that. Hmm

And that too, obviously.

Idiotic idea. We're doing what we can to save energy all of the time - lights out in rooms we're not in etc etc.
