Is this tall for a 3.5 year old?

He’s 3ft 5 inches.

The average is apparent 3ft 2.9 inches.

I’m trying to work out how tall he’ll be as an adult as my dad is 6ft 7.

This is literally what the graphs in his red book exist for, why not just check there?

OutbackQueen · 08/04/2022 20:36

Yes check red book. DD was on the 99th centile for height when she was growing but has only ended up at 5’10”.

Lonoxo · 08/04/2022 20:37

What percentile was he when he was born? Is he following the projected curve on the graph in the red book? On one of the sides of the pages, there’s a height predictor which is based on the percentiles.

YingMei · 08/04/2022 20:37

If you know he is taller than the average, as stated here, then yes - he is tall.
You can work out a predicted adult height based on yours and your DHs (don't ask me how but there are many calculator things online) But this still has + or - 10cm.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 08/04/2022 20:38

He should be double his height at 2.5 years as an adult.

Whatever00 · 08/04/2022 20:43

My DC1 is 3 ft 7 inches and 3 and 4 months. She is 98 percentile and i reckon will be around 6 ft.

Chocolatebun · 08/04/2022 20:48

He was on 99 percentile when born.

Not sure you can really tell tbh. My first was off the charts as a wee kid but ended up at 5 10" and second was smaller (nearer the middle line) and ruined at 6 4".

VladmirsPoutine · 08/04/2022 20:50

How tall are you and his dad?

My mother is 5'6 and my father is 6'6. I'm 5'10 and my siblings range between 5'7 - 6'7.

DragonMovie · 08/04/2022 20:54

My parents were told I’d be over 6ft when I was 3. I’m 5’8.

Grr6158 · 08/04/2022 20:58

My daughter at age 3 years and 10 months was 3ft 8.4 inches.

My husband and I are tall but not as tall as your dad

Grenlei · 08/04/2022 20:59

@OnceAgainWithFeeling

He should be double his height at 2.5 years as an adult.
This didn't work for me, I was over 3ft tall at 2.5 years old (I was constantly mistaken for being much older). I grew up thinking I'd be model height. However I stopped growing at 12, and never made it past 5ft 6!
itbemay1 · 08/04/2022 21:20

I'm 6ft DH is 5ft 11, DD is 5ft 7 (21) and DS is 6ft 2 (17) no idea what's gone on there!

monsterflake · 08/04/2022 21:27

If he was born on 99th centile its likely that's just the way he is meant to be. My daughter is the opposite, she's 3ft 1 and turns 5 next month, she "flagged up" as being tiny on the NHS screening thing they have in reception but even then, as she sees the school nurse anyway for problems with her bowels, I was told they aren't concerned as her BMI is normal they are just going to measure her again in 6 months.

I don't think anyone would be medically concerned if he's tall unless there are other things going on with his health too.

Sushi7 · 08/04/2022 21:29

@Chocolatebun How tall and you and your ds dad? If you’re both taller than average then your ds probably will be. If one of you isn’t tall then you can’t really predict.

DD was on the 99th centile for height when she was growing but has only ended up at 5’10”.
@OutbackQueen that is VERY VERY tall. Not sure why you chose the word “only.”Grin

Chocolatebun · 08/04/2022 21:55

I’m 5’7, his dad is 5’10

Lots of tall men in my dad’s side of the family though.

I’d say you’re tall for a woman and your DH is around average height. If your DH was over 6ft then it would be highly likely that you’d have tall dc.

For comparison, my mum is very petite and my dad is very tall. I am petite and my brothers are a mix of average or tall. My dad's side of the family are tall. My DP is very tall but his siblings are average height.

Skelligsfeathers · 09/04/2022 08:11

I am 5'11 and dh is 6'1"
Our eldest was off the charts throughout childhood. Very tall but very slim. Started reception in 7-8 uniform!
He's an adult now and 6'8'!!

bloodywhitecat · 09/04/2022 08:14

I am 5'7, exDH is 5'10, DD is 5'1 and DS is 6'2, they were both 50th centile babies at birth so I would say it is impossible to say at this time whether he'll be a tall adult but right now, yes he is taller than average.

Porcupineintherough · 09/04/2022 08:34

My nephew was a very tall toddler and child and ended up as a tall but not exceptionally so (6') adult. Ds1 was a tiny toddler and child and is 5'10" at 16 (so average height w maybe another inch to go). You'll just have to wait and see.

rottiemott · 09/04/2022 08:37

how accurate are the red books as there is quite a lot of leeway?

I was average height until my teens when I shot up to 5ft 9. DH was average until his teens & then shot up. All our siblings are similar.

liveforsummer · 09/04/2022 09:46

2 inches above the average is not massive. Don't forget averages are taken from a huge range so many will be significantly taller not just 2 inches.

Also this. Dd was tiny til she hit 12 and now has suddenly sprouted and is significantly taller than most of her friends who towered above her aged 3. She went from wearing as much as 4 years below her age in clothes to now needing adult size 4 because of height virtually over night. Individuals grow at different rates and ages so pretty hard to judge at 3.
