Just joined Twitter, then got immediately blocked for suspicious activity, I haven’t even sent a tweet!

I have no idea how I broke Twitter rules! Can someone tell me what I did wrong.

I am not on any social media. No Twitter, face book, Instagram. Oh but I do have a Pinterest board ( too many probably, but I have to differentiate between my niche interests). Crochet baby blankets, crochet Afghan blankets, crochet round blankets etc. Oh and mumsnet of course. I didn’t even know I was GC until I looked at the feminism boards. Thankyou so much you dinosaurs/ nest of vipers!

Any way I’m looking for a therapist re relationship counselling. The therapist that’s been suggested her profile doesn’t have couples therapy mentioned, but does talk about childhood trauma and gender identity, pretty much as the first thing.

I am Gender critical, so I thought I would check out her Twitter just to see what her views were on this subject.

So I joined Twitter today. I just had time to follow JK Rowling (because you have to do that first obvs) then looked up this therapist, and was just highlighting the topics she had posted about (ie biology, cycling etc). Then I got a message from Twitter saying I was blocked for suspicious activity.

So have I won an award for the shortest time anyone has been on Twitter before being blocked. Time : less than 5 minutes. Following: 1 person. Followers: 0 of course! Tweets sent: 0.

Seriously, can anyone tell me what my suspicious activity was?

So AIBU in thinking I did nothing wrong here?

They’re very anti women on Twitter. Very anti people who don’t tow the TRA line. They obviously pegged you as a believer in biology! 😁

When you say 'highlighting topics' do you mean you were liking or RTing lots of her tweets? If a brand new account suddenly starts liking or RTing loads and loads of things immediately in quick succession, it probably triggers an alert that it might be an automated, bot type thing.

Same thing happened to me with my Pinterest. Nothing sinister, no big deal, nothing to do with your views or opinions.

You haven't been 'blocked', either - they'll have suspended the account, probably temporarily, or limited its features while they look at it further. Blocking is a different thing and done by individuals, not Twitter.

Surely you know yourself what the issue was.

And I say this as someone as GC as they come.

No, I didn’t even get as far as retweeting.

I looked up this therapists name, then below there were some lists of the subjects she had tweeted about. It gave me the option to find those tweets, so that’s when I started tapping on those subjects, ie biology, cycling etc. I wasn’t interest in knowing about where she’d had a great time on holiday, or seeing pictures of her last meal, I just wanted to know if she was madly into gender ideology, and that’s when Twitter accused me of “suspicious activity”

Unless it’s because The only person I followed was JKR (blessed be her name).

Just for info, when I filled in the box to ask give them an explanation for my errant behaviour I sent them my first EVER emoji. I’m pretty useless at tech and I’ve managed over 50years expressing myself just using the English language. It was a smiling face, but bloody hell there were so many of them - so I’m hoping that that single emoji managed to say “look I’m kinda pissed off, can’t believe this has happened, but I’m going to be polite and give you my earnest reasoning, and pretend that I am the sort of person who will take this in a lighthearted way” but for all I know it might have been an emoji that meant “look I’m smiling, but I’m dead on the inside.”

This happens sometimes when you make a new account, did you use an email address or mobile number to register?

sleepymum50 · 09/04/2022 20:58

I used an email address

They prefer a mobile number as it could be any email address..this has happened to a couple of my friends but sorted once they put their mobile number in

Twitter is weird and annoying. If I log out (and I do around 50% of the time,) EVERY TIME I go to log back in, it says 'there has been some suspicious activity on your account, please enter your phone number to confirm it's you!' Confused

It happens so often that it puts me off logging out. We're encouraged to log out of things like this, then they do shit like this. Pisses me off. There has been NO suspicious activity FFS. Sometimes I log out, and then log back in a few seconds later as I remember something I wanted to post, and it does it then too! No-one tried to hack my Twitter account in that 3 or 4 seconds!

MurmuratingStarling · 09/04/2022 22:47

Oh @sleepymum50 sorry! Yeah, I doubt you did anything wrong, or 'suspicious' at all!!!
