To think experts are wrong to say infants don't dream?

Just that, really. Sitting here right now with a 10 week old who seems to me to be clearly having a nightmare. I know they say it's just muscle memory etc but I just think they are wrong. Maybe they don't dream like us but they seem to me to dream. Maybe just random images or feelings etc. rather than 'narrative' dreams like adults.

What do you guys think? AIBU to think scientists and experts are wrong that babies don't dream before age 2?

Sorry OP I tend to refer to the specialists and experts on things I'm not expert on.

Having said that, is this an area where the science is less strong? Are there still questions?

If not, and they have the brain scans etc then yes, I'd agree with the science.

Who says they don’t dream?

bluebaul · 08/04/2022 12:38

Why do you think they are 'clearly' having a nightmare?

Featuredcreature · 08/04/2022 12:40

Why would they think that they don't dream? Sounds like bollocks.

DragonOverTheMoon · 08/04/2022 12:40

I thought they did dream. I thought that a baby sees something new and then dreams it and thats how it imprints in their consciousness.

Runaway1 · 08/04/2022 12:44

I’ve never read anything saying that infants don’t dream. Nightmares become more common around age 2 as part of a development stage, but does anyone suggest they don’t happen before that?

Moody123 · 08/04/2022 12:46

I thought that's how they learned ... they process everything during the day while they sleep
I would love to see some studies on this, as it sounds fascinating

JohannSebastianBach · 08/04/2022 12:47

Who said they don't?

Scottishnewmum · 08/04/2022 13:29

They think they don't, apparently: www.livescience.com/33702-babies-dream-sleep.html

My baby whimpers in her sleep, laughs, smiles etc. Surely they are dreaming, even at that age?

Our dog used to dream - you could see her paws going like mad, as if she was chasing something, and she’d make little woofing noises.

So I don’t see why on earth anyone would say that babies don’t.,
