Tesco Clubcard app and vouchers

Not really an AIBU, more a WWYD?

I've come across rather a strange anomaly. I had £7 in vouchers, in the Tesco Clubcard app, and used them on a purchase. When I got home and checked, the £7 voucher was still on my phone. So, the next time I went to Tesco I used it again. And when I checked it was still on my phone.

The next time I used it again. And it's still on my phone. So hooray, £14 worth of free money! And more to come! In fact, if I ensure my shopping doesn't come to more than £7 a time, I'm getting free groceries from Tesco for life!

But I'm getting rather worried. When you use paper vouchers, that's it, you use them, dispose of them and that's it. But it appears with the voucher on the app, you can use it again and again. Surely that's wrong. Surely Tesco are going to come at me. It's basically fraud isn't it. What should I do? Anyone else come across this?

Ooh difficult one. I'd be sorely tempted to carry on using it and act naive and innocent if challenged at a later date. Their screw up 🤷‍♂️

I think your app is glitched. I used a voucher on the app last night and it disappeared like normal…

The temptation would be there to keep using it, but as it’s tied to you and it’s not overly believable that you thought you had many £7 vouchers and didn’t realise you were continually using the same one, I don’t think I actually would… but I have a law degree & overthink a lot, so that might explain my thinking!

Yup - a lucky glitch in your app. I used a voucher on Wednesday and it disappeared straight after. And once (because I'm also cheeky like you!) I had taken a screen shot of the QR code/barcode, and tried to reuse that, and it wouldn't let me and said it had already been used. So definitely a temporary lucky glitch!

I'm pretty sure Supermarkets, including Tesco, have had customers prosecuted for doing this OP. This is from 2011, www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-2041963/Money-vouchers-crackdown-Shoppers-face-convictions-abusing-Tesco-Clubcard-Sainsbury-deals.html

Ooer!

I have only done it once or twice, not multiple times as reported in the article.

Think I will phone Tesco and see if they can fix it.

I just rang Tesco and they looked at my account and said the £7 voucher hasn't been used!

I'm damn sure it has, as recall £20 worth of shopping showing as £13 on my bank account website.

They told me to get a receipt next time to show if the money has been taken off or not, and phone back if there is a problem.

They assured me I would not be prosecuted!!

It doesn’t surprise me, Tesco has some seriously lax procedures from what I can see as a mere customer.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 08/04/2022 11:12

The obligation is on them to fix it. But if you are knowingly using it multiple times then I'm not sure. You might need some legal advice.

Legal* obvs Blush

Op just make sure you change your username and use a secure IP address because otherwise this could be the next dailyfail scoop! As they help Tesco crack down on multiple voucher using mumsnetters

Jevarakh · 08/04/2022 14:34

Greenfingers I have already reported it to them. I do not need legal advice! Well, not for this particular issue anyway!

UPDATE

Well, I tried the £7 voucher, it worked, and it vanished from my phone.

Sorry for such an anticlimactic, er, climax.
