Would it be weird to donate dog food to the food bank?

I’ve been sorting cupboards and have lots of tons of people food to donate to the food bank but also found a big bag of tinned dog food that mine can’t eat as it upsets his tummy.

Would it be weird to donate it (there must be people fallen on harder times with pets?) I don’t remember ever seeing it listed as a “we need” item and don’t want it to look weird!

Yes I would, I donate cat food, litter and toiletries.

Sounds like a good idea to me, or you could give it to a local rescue

EmergencyPoncho · 07/04/2022 10:25

Absolutely fine.

Amelion · 07/04/2022 10:26

I would, I’m sure someone will use it. Better than it sitting in the back of the cupboard!

iklboo · 07/04/2022 10:27

Yes it's fine. Our local sainsburys has a separate one for pet food, litter etc.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 07/04/2022 10:30

Great I will. I did think about rescue but my nearest one is 30 minutes away and I never seem to be heading that way.

To be honest my logic was pets are at greater risk of being given up at the minute if people can’t afford them anymore and as a dog owner I can’t imagine how sad I would feel if I couldn’t afford to feed my pet.

Not weird at all and a really good thing to do. People are giving up or abandoning their pets because they can't afford to feed them. Food banks will be familiar with people who's family also includes animals that need feeding.

Or there are also pet food banks that you can donate to. Just google pet food bank and the name of your city/county.

Good to know we have a sainburies not far away so I might go there to donate (May even buy some extra pet food to add to it too)

In date Pet food is always very welcome.

groovergirl · 07/04/2022 10:33

Absolutely donate it! Someone will be thrilled to have it.

I used to work in a role that involved distributing new product samples, and one time there were several boxes of cat food left over. I took them to our local food bank. The manager emailed to say that many pet owners were having a hard time with grocery bills and were really pleased to have the samples, as pet food didn't often turn up at the bank.

For out local Trussell Trust foodbank we note on the voucher whether client has pets, and the foodbank will give pet food/supplies if they have it. Not guaranteed to be there though.

Someone near me was asking for any food banks with dog food as she was struggling. Cant imagine having to choose between feeding your child and your dog, especially with a child old enough to be devastated if you have to rehome pet.

CounsellorTroi · 07/04/2022 10:40

Yes it’s fine. But please ensure your people food is still within date if you are going to donate it!
