To continue to pursue my deposit?

Rather boring but would appreciate perspectives - in brief:
I was looking for a kitten to buy just Xmas. Found one on a pet site, paid £50 deposit into seller's bank account and planned to first visit then collect kitten a few weeks later. Contacted buyer a couple of weeks later to visit (as buyer asked) and was told kitten had become very ill and things did not look good. Also told that she thought she had emailed me about this days ago (but she had not). I said how sorry I was and then asked for my deposit to be refunded once she confirmed the kitten was not going to pull through.
Buyer promised to send deposit but did not. I left it a week or two (as I thought that it would be an upsetting time ) but still nothing. Contacted buyer who said money would be sent soon once she had funds available in the coming days. No deposit returned - contacted again a week or so later and same thing happened. Contacted again a couple of weeks ago and was told she had returned it to my bank account. She has not. She says she will 'check with her bank'. I have remained trusting to the point that if she can prove she has sent it, I will contact the bank my end. (Proof could be for example, a reference number that is always generated when an online payment is made). I was promised this would be sent but now, nothing.
It is more the principle of what has happened and that I have basically been strung along for weeks waiting for payment.
Do I let it go?

you could say you will pursue with small claims if it doesn't go into your account by X date. That might be enough to kick her up the bum!

You've fallen for a well known scam OP. You'll never see that money again. Learn from it and move on.

Is the initial ad still up? Report her to the site...

Threaten them with small claims court and visit a local rescue centre eg RSPCA or similar , plenty of fur babies need a home and they will be healthy , neutered , jabbed, microchipped , flea'd and they will not rip you off

Sounds like a scam
