Like many it seems I have put on the well known 'lockdown stone'. I'm now struggling to shift it. Aibu to wonder why so many of us gained weight during the pandemic?

YABU as I think it’s clear what the reasons were - moving less for a lot of people and stress for most.

Not everyone put on weight, some lost it as obesity was a risk factor for covid, some lose instead of gain through stress, some had more free time for self care and exercise than usual. I lost weight as I’d never walked so much in my fucking life out of sheer boredom when there was nothing else to do.

Of course you are being unreasonable to wonder, there is only one reason which is Most people sat at home most of the day moving less and eating more.

I put on weight. I am a nurse and ate a lot of donated cakes in March 2020. I didn't have much time to exercise as my husband and I worked opposite shifts and were knackered. Our 'daily walk' was a walk with the kids which involved a lot of standing around while they went up and down hills on their scooters.

I put weight on, lockdown, homeschooling, new baby it was alot. Working to get it off now

Slimshady86 · 06/04/2022 19:14

Wish mine was only a stone. I put on a lockdown 3 stone Blush

ofwarren · 06/04/2022 19:16

I put on a stone from boredom eating and not going anywhere.
Lost it now though using nutracheck app.

Eatglass · 06/04/2022 19:19

I put on and was the heaviest i'd ever been. For me it was no incentive to wear nice clothes as nowhere to go and two years of wearing joggers meant i put on weight without really realising. I have lost now though since purchasing a treadmill and being stricter with my meals.

Well, YAB a bit U. We were in lockdown so people weren’t doing that incidental movement that most of us do without thinking about it - walking to the bus stop, nipping to the shops during your lunch break, walking up and down stairs in the office. Plus, we were only allowed out once a day to exercise and that wasn’t really exercise if you had small children in tow who wanted to examine every leaf and twig. WFM often means free access to the fridge, plus lots of people were stressed because they were juggling work and homeschooling with trying to make sure vulnerable relatives got enough food etc. All that can lead to stress/comfort eating.

CherryPieface · 06/04/2022 19:51

Eating and drinking were our only treats! Food shops were the only ones open. Gyms were closed etc etc. I still don’t feel like everything is back to normal yet as I’m still WFH for some of the week so my treats keep coming.

NerrSnerr · 06/04/2022 19:59

@Responsiveroo I was really busy but didn't work 24 hours a day! I ate the cakes when I wasn't working!

Twizbe · 06/04/2022 20:09

I lost weight in lockdown because I wasn't going to Costa almost daily and with the supermarket issues I was rationing the food we had. I was meal planning down to the last grain of rice and with that making sure the kids and DH were fed before me.

I put it back on once the coffee shops were open again lol.

I'm doing Noom now to try and shift it again while coffee shops are open lol.

SockFluffInTheBath · 06/04/2022 20:10

I’ve piled it on- gone from an 8/10 to a generous 12- but have been wfh for 2 yrs now (much less movement) and last year was really stressful for personal reasons. I’m torn between boot camping myself and thinking that life is too short to spend it being hungry and denying myself that piece of cake. The cake is winning if you were in doubt Grin I’d like to be the shape I was but I’m not bothered enough to do what it would take to change. I’m not getting bigger, my weight or rather size seems stable, so meh. Cake it is Smile

EssexLioness · 06/04/2022 20:14

I think it’s pretty obvious why people may have gained during lockdown. I lost 3 stone because my stress levels went down in the first lockdown and I had more time for self care, exercised more and had the time and inclination to cook healthier meals, meal plan etc. we also cut our habit of 2-3 takeaways a week to one every few months.
However, I can completely see how people at home more may eat more from stress and boredom. I am a stress/ boredom eater myself and it is so easy to get into the habit of eating little extra bits without realising how it all adds up

Not the cakes!! The lack of exercise

NerrSnerr · 06/04/2022 20:26

@Responsiveroo ah, I understand! Unfortunately the cake outdid all the running around! I just ate far too much.
