Friends are proposing spending the May bank holiday weekend in Poland. Just general sightseeing and cultural activities just as a fun city break.

AIBU to think this is a bit odd

Very.
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 04/04/2022 12:11

What's odd about it, specifically?
The current political situation and women's access to abortion might put me off but otherwise I would love to visit Poland.

womaniswomaniswoman · 04/04/2022 12:11

What's odd about it? It's incredibly beautiful.

thebabynanny · 04/04/2022 12:13

Because of the war in Ukraine?
Or because you don't like Poland?

Persephoned · 04/04/2022 12:14

Bank holiday weekends are great for a mini break - more time! What’s odd about going to Poland??

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 04/04/2022 12:14

My soldier ds is going at the weekend to help for at least 4 months.
Isn't a place for having fun right now imo.

Figgyroller · 04/04/2022 12:15

Krakow is amazing, as is Warsaw. As travel destinations they are a pretty popular places to visit. Is it the proximity to Ukraine that is worrying you?

touristina · 04/04/2022 12:15

Well yes. The current political situation.

touristina · 04/04/2022 12:16

Nothing against Poland in general!

LBFseBrom · 04/04/2022 12:17

No (unless you are worried about Poland's proximity to the Ukraine). My son occasionally works in Poland and loves it, recommends that people go there for a trip. Each to their own.

Poland's a pretty big place, there will be lots of hotel, restaurant and bar owners there who will struggle if no one has fun there...
CatsArePeople · 04/04/2022 12:17

Why odd? Poland is beautiful and quite cheap.

SVRT19674 · 04/04/2022 12:19

My mum´s helper went off to Poland with her daughters. They loved it. She said Krakow was beautiful, lovely landscapes and very picturesque. Well worth it.

thebabynanny · 04/04/2022 12:19

@touristina

Well yes. The current political situation.
To be fair, if Putin annexes Poland over the bank holiday weekend then the whole of Europe is going to be fucked.
DJSteves · 04/04/2022 12:20

I've had two fabulous holidays in Poland. Krakow and Gdańsk. Both are beautiful cities. I want to go back and see Warsaw

touristina · 04/04/2022 12:25

Ha. "Sorry, Vlad, old chap, would you mind holding off until Tuesday when we're all back in the office, cheers"

Not worried directly for my safety so much as the idea of laughing with mates about our boozy weekend while on a plane probably containing refugees fleeing a war zone?

Maybe just me

OP posts:
ShaneTwane · 04/04/2022 12:31

So because there is a war in Ukraine you think Poland's tourism industry should collapse? Interesting take.

tara66 · 04/04/2022 12:37

You would be taking up seats on return flight that some refugees will not be able to take. I know someone who went to Rumania and came back at weekend and plane was full of refugees.

Georgeskitchen · 04/04/2022 12:44

I haven't been to Poland but I believe its a beautiful country steeped in history and culture. The Polish people haven't stopped needing income from tourism despite the horrors in Ukraine. I would still go x

Justcallmebebes · 04/04/2022 12:44

Poland is an amazing country. I love it and I bet they have better weather at the moment

touristina · 04/04/2022 12:51

I assume everyone in this thread worried for Poland's tourism industry is also planning a trip there shortly, then?

OP posts:
FrankLeeSpeaking · 04/04/2022 12:51

I'd still go.

Meadmaiden · 04/04/2022 12:52

Yes yabu. Poland is a beautiful country with many sights to see.

The war is in the Ukraine, not Poland. Poland is safe.

Meadmaiden · 04/04/2022 12:53

Actually, yes I am. I think it's important to support them, given they are doing so much for the refugees.
EatSleepRantRepeat · 04/04/2022 12:54

It's a beautiful country, and Poland deserves our tourism money, they've done so much to help millions of refugees. Plus they're not waving them off on dangerous journeys in leaky dinghys and under HGVs like some other countries we could holiday in Hmm.

If Poo-tin invades Poland we have far bigger problems than making the land journey back from holiday!
