I was having a chat with my OH today. Bit of background we used to coach/work in a semi extreme sport and several years ago he’d had a scary experience and left the sport. Since then we’d bought a house and had a child, change of jobs for him etc). I’d spent yesterday before with a senior coach working out how to get back to my former level and had a really good day. She’d advised I’d fly through the new coaching levels which really pleased me. He’s responded with ‘that’s because they’ve dumbed it down’. AIBU to be severely pissed off?

Yeah, that's really rude and mean. I presume he's not usually such a thoughtless twat?

It sparked a moment of jealousy for him. We are all only human.

Good luck with the sport, though.

D0lphine · 03/04/2022 17:12

Yeah he is jealous and mean. I'd just crack on with it and don't ask his opinion again.

Sapphirejane · 03/04/2022 17:15

@MissNothing1991 - what is the point of any thread, or life whilst we are at it? What a weird comment. OP wants a bit of perspective, that’s all.

EmpressCixi · 03/04/2022 17:17

Well have they dumbed it down or not?
Who is BU depends on the reality not what you or he prefers to be reality.

FabFitFifties · 03/04/2022 17:18

YANBU - he's jealous and doesn't want you to feel good. I'd let him know, in no uncertain terms, how unattractive that is.

Summerofcontent · 03/04/2022 17:18

I suspect it's brought up some uncomfortable feelings and that's his way of dealing with them.

Pistepersistence · 03/04/2022 17:19

I am into adventures sports and love it when men mansplain and assume they know better. It is annoying. YANBU

1forAll74 · 03/04/2022 17:32

It's often quite a typical statement from someone, even a partner., so not worth thinking about, or even writing about.

Sapphirejane · 03/04/2022 17:41

@1forAll74 - it is definitely not a typical statement from a partner or even a friend. I would definitely think about it and why they respected me so little. I think you need to reassess your expectations of people.

MrsWinters · 03/04/2022 17:42

Have they dumbed it down, changed standards or improved equipment making certain thinks more attainable?
Without knowing the context it’s impossible to say.

GeneLovesJezebel · 03/04/2022 17:42

Sounds like jealousy to me.

girlmom21 · 03/04/2022 17:44

Are you sure he wasn't joking?
Is it easier now?

Nightlystroll · 03/04/2022 17:45

I thought there was a general belief that most things have been dumbed down but it doesn't mean someone should piss on your chips when you're feeling good about yourself.

HollowTalk · 03/04/2022 17:46

He's jealous and doesn't want you to have something he can't have. Is he like that in other ways?

MurmuratingStarling · 03/04/2022 17:47

YANBU. As has been said, it sounds like he is jealous. That was a spiteful comment.

BetsyBigNose · 03/04/2022 17:50

I agree with @Summerofcontent - perhaps he is still feeling shaken up by what happened to him and he's projecting these feelings onto you. Either way, you should try talking to him about it, let him know that his comment hurt your feelings and ask him why he said it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 17:56

It is mean.

He is jealous. That doesn’t make it OK, but it does make it worth taking about. Next weekend say you were hurt by it, you think it’s untrue and illogical and you expect him to be supportive of you.

ArianaDumbledore · 03/04/2022 17:58

YANBU
Even if they had "dumbed it down" (and, having stepped away from the sport, I would question if he could say that with any authority..), it's a spiteful put-down.

BOOTS52 · 03/04/2022 18:01

That is so unkind and unfair of him and he is just jealous of what you did and can achieve. I would tell him to support you and if he can't then say nothing at all as you are not putting up with his snidy comments and insecure comments. You go for it and enjoy what makes you happy. If anything things will have gotten harder and you should be very happy that the coach said you will fly through it so go for it.

whynotwhy · 03/04/2022 20:14

You need to be a bit more sensitive.

chisanunian · 03/04/2022 20:31

Wow, that was a real put-down wasn't it? What a nasty and uncalled-for thing to say to you.

Youvebeengonesolong · 03/04/2022 20:34

Did you challenge him on it op?

katicomps · 03/04/2022 20:44

@whynotwhy

You need to be a bit more sensitive.

Are you joking? Her partner implied she's thick/a bit useless and you're blaming her?
