Weird cravings????

Anyone else get really weird and strong food cravings??

I either crave salt or very juicy fruits. When I’m craving salt, I eat anything salty I can find and add salt to absolutely everything. I dip bread in salt and have carrot sticks covered in salt. I put it on toast and sometimes just eat it straight off a spoon. I can tell it tastes salty but never too salty, but i crave it so strongly that it I don’t even notice it’s too salty even when I eat it off a spoon. I just love it and when my body craves it it’s as if a voice in my stomach is like GET SALT ASAP. The cravings sometimes wake me up during the night and I need to go and eat some salt to stop the cravings so i can sleep again.

And on the opposite, I often go through cravings for juicy fruit too. Oranges, apples, just any sort of juicy fruit. Again, it’s as if my body is like desperate for it and I have to have it. It’s such a strong craving. I recently woke up during the night with such a strong craving I had to drive a litre of tropicana juice and eat 2 apples, 3 tangerines and 6 strawberries before I had enough to satisfy the cravings to go back to sleep. I know I sound greedy, I’m honestly not, but the cravings are so strong and it feels like my body needs it so badly. It’s not sugar I’m craving- I don’t feel like chocolate or other sugary foods, it’s specifically juicy fruits or fruit juice.

I’m healthy (blood test recently was fine) and I’m youngish (early 20s) and have a BMI of 19. There’s nothing wrong with me causing the cravings but they’re so strong and I want them to stop. Anyone have any advice? Am I feeding into the cravings and making them by worse? How do I stop the cravings being so strong??

Thanks Smile

Could you be dehydrated? Our bodies crave salt when we're dehydrated as it forces water out of our cells and into our bloodstream. That would also explain the juicy fruit cravings to me as your body wants the water content.

However I would strongly advise going to your GP and FGS stop eating spoonfuls of salt - you could kill yourself!

Sorry I should have said in my original post, I actually drink a lot of water, maybe around 3 litres a day already. Although maybe I’m still dehydrated and just need a bit more water? Argh I just wish I could stop these cravings! They’re so strong and even though my body is like no no no don’t eat salt, it feels like I have to to stop the cravings! Sad

Craving salt can be a symptom of addison's disease. You should go back to the doctor and get them to test your adrenal and pituitary function.

Have you lost any weight? Unquenchable thirst (both craving salt and juicy sugary fruit is a symptom of this) can be a symptom of type 1 diabetes; have you been checked for this?
