... to wonder about vivid dreams (sex)

Up front I'm not sharing nor looking for any details! I'm just asking a yes/no whether this is normal.

In 50s, and started HRT a while back. My sleep is much better, but one thing I've noticed is some very vivid dreams, sometimes/often sex. It's not a bad thing, but something very different. I've can vaguely remember having such sex dreams as a teen, but never since.

  • YABU - these type of dreams are normal, I have them sometimes
  • YANBU - that's not normal, I never have them, OP is weird!

Could this be HRT related? I've never noticed dreams much before, typically they'd be a blurry non-specific fragmented mess.

Was thinking to ask on next GP visit, but that's probably a strange question to ask!

Most people have sex dreams. It's really nothing to worry about and doesn't mean anything. Any change to your sleep pattern or hormones could trigger them.

For your next GP consultation about HRT they'll probably ask you a series of questions, anything that has changed, etc. So I'd certainly mention the changes in sleep cycle, and more vivid dreams.

Personally, HRT made a big difference to my sleep, but not to dreams. I never remember them, or barely have a sense of what they are about. The only extra vivid dreams I'm had were rooted in real world events (car crash, sexual assault) and very upsetting, but I don't have them any more.

I've never had a sex dream!

For many years after my final exams at Uni I'd often have very very real dreams. These were real life based because I needed good scored to be accepted to a PhD program. I had those dreams/feelings even after 20 years.

I would have expected that some form of sex dreams are fairly normal. Hopefully you enjoy them :)

I will indeed mention the sleep improvements and extra vivid dreams at the next GP visit (I'd planned to mention the sleep, but I should mention dreams too).

These dreams are not related to any real life events, but have real life people!

I was given hrt without having hormone levels measured, by a Dr who assumed I needed it.
Had really swollen boobs, sex drive went into hyperdrive. It was very odd and I didn't dare confess to a Dr until a phone call six months later, who said excess oestrogen could cause this.
I stopped it and went back to normal within a couple of weeks.

I'm on HRT and have had very vivid dreams. No necessarily sex related though. It's so extreme that I'm sometimes not sure if I dreamt something or if it actually happened.

I had a trial of Whoop and according to that I have a very high percentage of REM sleep. I don't know if that is an effect of HRT?

Ultra vivid dreams can be very scary indeed. I was in a car crash with my first car, had a lucky escape on an icy road, and had dreams about it. Trauma does impact dreams, and you'd see if with soldiers, rape victims, etc.

No HRT impact on my dreams though.

Also it could be interesting to look at your sleep cycles with a smart watch. Mine shows categories of sleep. Of course I have no idea if it is accurate or not, or even what it mean if it is!

I would have have assumed the sex dreams stuff was primarily for younger males, rather than post-menopausal women :) No offense meant OP. I'd gladly have them if I could :)

Are you in perimenopause and are you thinking about/feeling more sexy generally? there is a thing called the menopausal sex surge Wink

Even if it isn't this, and might be HRT related as the progestogen component can affect sleep for some, If they're nice dreams I'd just go with them and enjoy Grin. I get vivid dreams, some sex related, some not and quite graphic at times.
