Me and ex and have split up.
I'm literally so stressed about money I'm throwing up.
I'm about a week from being evicted and......

A Jury Summons shows up this afternoon.

I know they're not psychic, and in many other periods of my life I would have done it with pride? Not sure if that's the right word but I am a strong believer in justice.

But bloody hell the timing!!

Can i defer??

OP posts:
SweatyChamoisPad · 31/03/2022 21:05

I deferred when I was managing our company AGM when I would have sat. I wrote them a letter asking to defer and offered to be available from X date. I got a new date about a week later.

millytilly34 · 31/03/2022 21:06

I think you can tell them you can't do it due to mental health, not sure? Anyway, I agree it's a pain they choose now to call on you! Why now?! X

TeacupDrama · 31/03/2022 21:06

mostly you can defer by 6-12 months

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/03/2022 21:06

Oh plus because of everything else going on in my life the fucking "Courts and Tribunal" heading on the letter nearly gave me an actual panic attack.

Don't really have an AIBU, just needed somewhere to rant about it, sorry.

Yeah it feels (stupidly) like fate just went "here, have something else to stress about as well"

OK I will try this.

You’re being tested

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/03/2022 21:10

I honestly don't mind doing it at some point.

It's just at this point in my life I'm barely eating/sleeping properly, never mind judging a fucking crime!

OP posts:
Babyroobs · 31/03/2022 21:12

If you have young kids you can also use that to excuse yourself/ defer. I did when my kids were young. Never got called up again !

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/03/2022 21:12

@nalabae

You’re being tested
Hah this is how I feel right now......like life is just fuckin with me to see how much I can deal with before I just fucking break.
OP posts:
Morechocmorechoc · 31/03/2022 21:14

You might actually find it a nice break. I sat for two days reading a book until I was called. Then got 3 days of a petty crime with long lunch breaks. Shorter hours than work, full pay and expenses paid. Was a nice break really.

Thank you, that's really helpful.

It's just another thing on the massive and stressful to do list though do you know what I mean.

It's just like......will the universe just FUCK OFF and leave me alone for a bit please!!

I think you can get signed out of it for medical reasons - does it say that on your letter? If so get a line from your GP.

terrichild · 31/03/2022 21:18

I deferred without any problem as long as you give a decent reason. As you have such a difficult personal situation at the moment I’m sure you’ll get your date deferred.

Jonagirl · 31/03/2022 21:20

Jury letters where I am from aren't registered, was yours? If not just bin it

MrsPear · 31/03/2022 21:21

I deferred - I had young children and no one to take care of them and I couldn’t afford child care were my excuses. It was accepted and that was about 5 years ago.

dworky · 31/03/2022 21:26

You can defer but will definitely get re-called.

mumda · 31/03/2022 21:31

Ask to defer.
I have a hobby that requires work in summer and after agreeing I could defer, they called me in the November.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/03/2022 21:32

I deferred because one of my weeks covered school holidays and we were already at minimum staffing levels at work with prebooked annual leave.

I had to give 3 possible start dates, I gave the first 3 after the school holidays and was called to start the first one.

It is possible to defer but read the guidance properly and just be honest. I wasn’t sure that my reason would be accepted but it was.

Quornflakegirl · 31/03/2022 21:36

I was called for jury duty when my twins were 16 weeks old, I deferred and haven’t been called up again, it’s been almost 10 years!

lightisnotwhite · 31/03/2022 21:36

Yeah me too. I think you could do with the change in routine. If you’re broke k you’re broke. Jury service at least gets you lunch.
Dontfuckingsaycheese · 31/03/2022 21:38

Why don’t they offer it to people who want to do it? I would love to be on a jury!! It could still be random - just random selection from a bank of willing volunteers!!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 31/03/2022 21:39

Of course you can defer. Stop wasting your energy by making such a drama out of it.
