Will Smith could have made a different choice.

He had several moments to think about it as he made his way up to the podium. He could have calmly taken the mircrophone from Chris Rocks hand and addressed the audience on behalf of himself and Jada to say that joke was unacceptable (which it was) and then he could have invited Chris Rock to make a public apology there and then, which CR would have had to do , would have had no choice really, then WS could have returned to his seat dignity intact, showing the world how words rather than violence can be used to good effect, and this silly ugly petulant toxic masculinity nonsense could have been avoided. He revealed a very ugly side to himself. He should have been escorted out of that event for that behaviour.

So could Chris rock. Who did something for me much worse. He tried to take a woman’s alopecia and turn her into a global laughing stock

What’s your point, neither behaved well.

emuloc · 31/03/2022 09:58

This has been done to death now surely. What are you hoping to gain from starting another thread? In case it passed you by, nobody is perfect OP.

SilverHairedCat · 31/03/2022 10:00

I'll be honest, I'm shocked that Chris Rock still hasn't come out to apologise for the "joke". Comedy is not supposed to humiliate people, especially when they are sat only feet away from you.

I can't get worked up about a slap - if he'd said a similar comment intended to humiliate a woman in a pub on a Friday night, he could expect to be robustly dealt with for it. Not necessarily violence, but then I've also never seen a slap where a punch would do..... so tbh Smith held back a bit by choosing that highly theatrical style.

Mrsjayy · 31/03/2022 10:01

He was apparently asked to leave but refused, of course he should have behaved differently, I think he thinks he's invincible it happens when people ha e to much !

I agree with OP

Will Smith should have shamed Chris Rock without attacking him. Actually OP's idea would have been brilliant! I would have gone with a very simple walk out. He could come from backstage to receive his award later on

beautifullymad · 31/03/2022 10:03

Caused by a primal response from deep childhood trauma.

Doesn't excuse it but helps explain his reaction.

I agree. Rock was in the wrong but Smith didn't have to be.

Was he asked to leave?? I hadn't heard that. It doesn't suprise me that he refused , but he shouldn't have been asked he should have been ordered to leave by security.

Oh I’m sorry op I didn’t realise you only wished people to respond if they agree with you. Can you ask mnhq to amend your op to include this?

That would be helpful so you don’t need to keep going at posters.

emuloc · 31/03/2022 10:06

Nah, I think I will stay thanks.Brew

wanttomarryamillionaire · 31/03/2022 10:06

It was utterly pathetic and he should have been removed from the oscars and had his taken away! Chris Rock made a joke thats what comedians do and will didn't care leas until his wife who has publicly humiliated him plenty of times gleefully telling the world about her affairs looked T him as if to say "do something".

Lilifer · 31/03/2022 10:06

Yes agreed! That would have been very effective and very powerful. For such an intelligent man that Will Smith is he could have really dealt with this in several ways that did not include physical assault.

Jada isn't and never has been a laughing stock.
Mrsjayy · 31/03/2022 10:07

Yes I read it this morning , I Imagine they didn't want to make a fuss by forecably removing him he had already made a scene ! He looked like he was on some substance be it alcohol or whatever his attitude was just bizarre.

Quoted the wrong post but you get my point

NuffSaidSam · 31/03/2022 10:08

I think if he'd had the foresight and anger management skills to make a different choice then he would have done.

He should have made a different choice. But I doubt he was able to in the moment. That's the problem!

The joke wasn't great, but the physical violence was absolutely and completely unacceptable.

Horcruxe · 31/03/2022 10:09

Benefit of hindsight.

It's ok sitting here a few days later and saying what should have happened.

girlmom21 · 31/03/2022 10:09

I've been watching some videos of their previous interviews together. She's horrible to him. This was more about proving his masculinity to her than it was anything else.

Ocsetldil · 31/03/2022 10:10

He’ll be off to rehab soon,I reckon

Inkanta · 31/03/2022 10:11

Yes OP, or perhaps decided to do a pretend staged slap and then sat down and not followed through with the effing and blinding. He would have got away with that.

I think he just flipped. His wife's look or something made him overreact.

Not really - the first time I saw the clip which was just after it aired I assumed because he looked so calm that he was going to take the Mike and speak in to it - he could have really made Chris Rock look so small and petty by standing up for Jada in an articulate dignified way, instead his actions made him look bad but also garnered a bit of sympathy for Rock which is a shame cos it was a shitty thing of Rock to say. But I don't think he deserved a slap for it.
