My son is 6 months old and has had chronic constipation since I can remember. No issues passing stools after birth or weeks following. No issues with weight gain or anything else. However, he’s always strained and struggled to pass stools, even when EBF (liquid poops). Of course when he started solids he became constipated for 7 days and I ended up using lactulose to initiate a bowel movements. Worked within 38 hours or so.

He’s now on Movicol once a day. 3 weeks in and not much of an improvement. He doesn’t poop everyday, he strains and screams do poop. Sometimes keeping us both up all night and day. He had courgette in his nappy, lots of it despite now having eaten it for 8 days. Is this a concern?

I don’t know whether any of this is normal. I feel my doctor isn’t listening to me as I’ve mentioned his constipation since a few weeks of age. Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks 😊

Pre weaning how often did he poo and more importantly what was the consistency like?

Blue89 · 30/03/2022 22:59

@Duracellbunnywannabe he would poop around once a day. The straining was constant and I’m sleep deprived as he’d wake every 1-2 hours screaming. Consistency was liquid.

My son had Hirschsprungs and he basically had no spontaneous bowel movements from birth so it doesn’t sound like it to me unless it’s an ultra short segment. Lots of other things it could be though. Your gp isn’t going to be able to assist you anyway - you have to push for a referral to a specialist at your nearest large children’s hospital either to a gastroenterologist or to a general surgeon (I’d say the latter most helpful though - they only way to rule out Hirschsprung’s is with a biopsy)

Then that is not constipation if it was liquid. It definitely sounds like you need to write this all done as bullet points including food clearly visible from 8 days previous and ask for a referral to peads.
