Hi! Sorry this is long. Have tried to trim as much as poss!

I bought a mattress from Dreams end of last year. Not long after, it collapsed leaving the frame sticking out causing me an injury to my ankle during my sleep.
Dreams customer services kindly offered to exchange it (over the phone) for another type (Wasn’t keen on getting another of the same). I wasn’t familiar with any of their other mattresses, so I just asked for a foam mattress around the same price. They said I had a 30 day comfort guarantee so I wasn’t worried about choosing over phone.

Well the foam mattress was no good for me. So before calling Dreams CS, I went to a Dreams showroom to try a few out. I found a couple I liked including one called ‘Barton’ although it cost a fair bit more.

When I got home, I called CS back and the lady was very understanding. Said she too didn’t like foam mattresses & was horrified that my original mattress had failed the way it did, leading to an injury! I mentioned the names of the mattresses I liked, inc the Barton, then she went to speak to her Manager. 15 mins later, she came back to say “As your original mattress was faulty and ultimately caused you an injury, we’re going to send you the Barton for no additional charge.”
Wow!

Well, delivery day comes and low & behold, they’ve brought me a bloomin’ double! How?! My previous mattresses were king size & it was an exchange. Never mind, mistakes happen. At least I have somewhere comfy to sleep, not a massive deal.
So I call CS again… I end up being told “Oh right. The lady you spoke to must’ve presumed you only wanted a double as that was only £49 more than the foam one. The king size is £249 more than the foam one. We wouldn’t be able to waive the full additional cost I’m afraid. You’ll still need to pay £200 to exchange to the king size Barton”
😳
I politely pointed out that the lady I spoke to previously had told me they would give me “the Barton at no additional cost” That it was her mistake to presume it was a double - she should’ve looked at the size of what I was exchanging from. That’s her job! Again - politely, I said I understand. However it’s not my fault she made a mistake. I was offered something (& fully expected it to be the same size!) and I’m now having that essentially reneged.
I also made sure he was aware that my original mattress was faulty & caused me a not-insignificant injury; which is what has caused all of this to begin with.

They won’t budge. They agree it’s totally unfair, have apologised but still will not allow me a king size without a further £200 payment!

So tonight, I have to sleep on a wrong size of the type of mattress I was originally promised, knowing I can’t have that mattress style in the correct size to fit my bed frame, as I simply cannot afford it! Even though that's exactly what I was originally offered. All because some lady made a mistake 😳

I would have completely understood had they said in the beginning “As it’s a king size, we would need an additional payment. If it was a double, you could have it as that is considerably less” but none of that was said. Just “…we’re going to send you the Barton at no additional cost” as a comfort exchange for the king size foam mattress!

AIBU for standing my ground on this one?

I do have other more serious things going on in my life right now and I’m worried that they are clouding my judgment on this.

Thank you

I'd be pretty pissed off by now if I were you and just demanding my money back sbd going elsewhere. How many times can this go wrong? OK the foam one wasn't totally their fault, but still it was another screw up.

Problem is, that would land me with no mattress at all and my child sleeps in my bed with me also (special needs). She does have her own bed of course, but it's a cabin bed and she categorically won't sleep in it.

I take your point though and I agree! I totally would if I could

What I mean is, I'd have to wait for the refund to clear and they wouldn't send it until after they receive the double one back. Meaning several days with no mattress plus however long it takes for the new one to come Confused

Oh god what a mess. Can you escalate the complaint to anyone
SpringsSprung · 29/03/2022 19:38

@KatsuKatsu Yes I've requested a manager call back. I fully expect to not receive said call, as I'm sure they're calling me a 'Karen' by now Sad

Fingers crossed for you. I'm sure once you explain it they will be sympathetic.

RiojaRose · 29/03/2022 19:53

Yeah, I’d ask for my money back too. Clearly the woman you spoke to made a mistake, and they’re not obliged to honour it, but it would have been good customer relations to let this one go, in the circumstances.

Does it need to be a thick mattress? If not, I’d recommend an IKEA foam mattress. I’ve had mine for 12 years and find it really comfortable. Probably not as suitable for eg a metal bed base though.

LadyBadenPowellsHat · 29/03/2022 19:56

I'm sure they'll love to expect your lawsuit against them for the injury you sustained as a result of their faulty product.

Because obviously, they're so right, an extra £200 for the right mattress is definitely too much for them.

Sods. Just point out you're looking at a case against them for the injury. And that you're a busy person and would much prefer they just make good on your KS Barton.

PurpleDrain · 29/03/2022 19:58

I was going to give you some advice on how I dealt with dreams but as you’ve now used the term Karen - then forget it, it’s pathetic.

Foam mattresses are no good for me. I need support. Thanks though

I think you need to read that post again. I was t calling anybody a Karen!?!

Ah ok sorry, I misread and thought you were looking for a foam mattress. I don’t fully understand the difference between foam and pocket spring or whatever, especially in terms of support. But I hope you get the best outcome possible in these horrible circumstances!

Thank you. I'm laid on the double 'Barton' now and it's fabulous! Sad It's like "Here's what you could've had!"

Now sulking like a petulant child! 😆

You said they were probably calling you a “Karen” so bloody tiresome and misogynistic

Useranon1 · 29/03/2022 21:27

But you were going to pay the difference for the Barton originally weren't you?

FleurDeLizz · 29/03/2022 21:32

Ask them to listen to the call - if they offered you a replacement they offered you a replacement it’s their fault if they sent the wrong size!

Momijin · 29/03/2022 21:33

Go on Twitter, facebook, instagram. Get your friend to share the posts. Show pictures. If it caused you an injury the £250 is fair compensation!

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 29/03/2022 21:40

Use the Resolver website. They're brilliant. Might take a little bit of time but just hang onto the double mattress for now, and keep pushing with them.

You were injured. Could have gone for compensation. They should be bending over backwards to help. You bought a king size and were told you would have an exchange for no extra charge. Then they send you a totally different size. They're in the wrong.

Put a factual review on trustpilot. Go to Resolver for help.

It's all sorted now, thankfully. Twitter to the rescue! They're sending out a king size, thank goodness. Thank you for the recommendation though, I'll keep Resolver in mind. Sounds like a great idea for issues like these 👍🏻

I'm glad it's been sorted now, but it's a shame you had to go through all that for them to do what they said they would do. Hope you get a good nights sleep on your new mattress very soon

You might want to ask @MNHQ to delete this thread. Anyone who looks up Dreams on Twitter can see your tweet, and then see who you are in real life. They'd be able to search everything you've posted on here and it wont be anonymous anymore.
