61% of people have been shamed for their period!

Just seen an add to combat shame around menstruation. Clearly a good thing. Except that the stat they use is that 61% of people have been shamed about their period. Given that only 50% of people have periods, they clearly mean 61% of girls. AIBU to believe that the notion that girls and women don’t really exist in any meaningful sense, as a subset of humanity or in any other measurable way, is gaining ground.

I think it's probably more a case that they forgot men exist? And that 61% of women have been shamed?

hugr · 26/03/2022 23:13

"61% of people have been shamed for their period" refers to 61% of people that have periods.

NugsNotDrugs · 26/03/2022 23:15

My money’s on that they wanted to avoid using the word ‘women’.
Lazy reporting.

Houseofmirth66 · 26/03/2022 23:19

61% of people is not 61% of women. The irony of thinking that using the word women is shameful in this context - in an ad about shame - is beyond ironic.

@hugr

"61% of people have been shamed for their period" refers to 61% of people that have periods.
Those people would be women then.
Houseofmirth66 · 26/03/2022 23:25

Imagine an ad that said 61% of people suffer from erectile disfunction at some point in their life. It would be ridiculous. No one ever substitutes the word ‘people’ for ‘men.’ They should stop doing it for women too.

Yep it’s the erosion of the word woman.

OutsideVoice · 26/03/2022 23:26

Woman’s a dirty word now, so many organisations, including cancer charities, have written out women in case they offend trans rights activists.

I recall reading a comment by an infamous Canadian trans identified male that women shouldn’t be mentioned in relation to periods (and other female things), because he’s a woman and he doesn’t have them.

That’s where we are right now.
Not happy?
Speak up.

SaturdayKitchenDisco · 26/03/2022 23:32

I made this exact point earlier to my husband. The numbers are wrong and misleading - and possibly a beach of ASA rules.
It can only be 61% of women not people. Biology matters!

Georgeskitchen · 26/03/2022 23:33

What exactly is period shaming?
I was born early 60s started periods 1974ish. It's a part of womanhood that we just got on with. It's a part of womanhood we just accepted and got on with. Why is it suddenly a big thing.

TidyDancer · 26/03/2022 23:37

I saw this advert and swore at the tv.

Not all girls and women have periods, but periods are only had by girls and women.

I hate that this still needs pointing out.

Swonderful · 27/03/2022 00:54

61% of people? Given that only 50% are women that means more than 100% of women have been shamed. What absolute nonsense!

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2022 02:38

At least 22% of males have periods?!? Shock

hugr · 27/03/2022 12:04

Those people would be women then.

Not all women have periods, and not all those who have periods want to be referred to as women, whether you agree with that or not.
