Need some help re council tax

Hi,

I am wondering if anybody can help me with this and make sense of it. I receive council tax support because I am on a low income and a single parent. For about 6 months I’ve received the council tax support and it’s meant I haven’t had to pay anything towards it. A few days ago I received a letter saying I now would need to pay £11 a month council tax but today I’ve received another letter to say it has been reviewed and I owe a single parent in a weeks time of £163.99. Which I will not be able to afford, I had no warning off this as the letter a few days ago said my bill would be £11. It also says in addition to that I owe £89.36. The only reason it says on the letter is that my entitlement to council tax support has changed. But it does not explain why, my circumstances are still the same. I will ring Monday but I’m quite confused and now worried that I owe a payment of £163.99 in one lump sum

What about the period preceding the six months? Had you paid it in full? If you should have been paying £11 pm the account may now be in arrears and the entire balance becomes payable.

@LIZS yes so I moved in in June 2021 and I paid the full balance for 3 months before being awarded the council tax support so I am really confused as to where the £163.99 as come from!

I was paying £99 a month until the council tax support was awarded

If you contact Citizens Advice and send them copies of your council tax statements and letters from the council, they will be able to work out what has happened.

Council tax increases may mean you now have to pay some , £11 a month isn’t far off the lump sum they are quoting

Thanks everyone the £11 a month is the £89 that I owe which they have said I can pay by direct debit but They are saying that I also owe £163.99 as a lump sum and there is no option of weekly payments!
