To ask wtf you wear when you go on a date?

Have a date soon with someone I've known for years...not had a date for about 5 years myself and just not got a clue what to wear...we're going to a bar for food and drinks.

Do you have special date clothes? Something fancier than normal? Wtf do you do if you go on multiple dates with the same person? Do I invest in some 'nicer' clothes.

I'm 27, long dyed hair, tattoos, size 12/14. I've bought this dress and I'm a bit boobier than the model, was thinking with some chunky boots and similar accessories.

I know it seems so simple, don't change yourself and get different stuff, I'm fine with being more glam, I love my makeup and wear jeans and a nice top most days (lol) but I cannot get on board with all the clothes that are in the shops, either look like I'm going clubbing with barely anything on or stuff is too casual. So please, send help, what do you wear on a date? And is this dress ok ?

I’m OLD and for a first date in a pub I wear jeans, trainers and a decent top as I just meet for a lunchtime drink. If it’s a nighttime thing I would dress for the venue.

TooMinty · 26/03/2022 14:53

What would you wear if you were going to the same venue with friends?

I agree with PP, dress for the venue, rather than the date. I love that dress. Styled as you suggest it would look great.

That dress is lush

Lovely dress, have fun on the date!

That dress is lovely

Same as I'd wear for friends, and according to venue.

It's what I wear underneath or not will depend on who the date is with, and whether I'd want them to get as far as seeing what's underneath or not. Wink

I'm a bit out of date, being 53, and not had a first date for 32 years 🤣 but for what it's worth, I think that dress is spot on, worn as you describe. Have a great time.

Yes lovely dress not too plain and not too bold, just right for the occasion👍

I'm 31 and loveeee fashion and would also say to dress for the venue/occasion (wedding, gig, cinema trip etc) rather than the fact it's a date per se. I think that dress looks lovely but the main thing is whether YOU like it. If everyone else is saying "yes" but you put it on and feel uncomfortable, you're not going to have a good time. Does it make you feel good? If so, definitely wear it. I'm a big believer in dressing for how you want to feel!

Other fail safes:

  • jeans, white t-shirt, strappy sandals or trainers, with a blazer thrown on. (Basically what Julia Roberts wears in the final scene of Pretty Woman, still so classy and timeless!)
  • Black flares, an oversized shirt (cotton or satin, depending on how fancy you want to feel), flat sandals.
  • I'm a big fan of a suit too, dressing it down with a t-shirt and trainers.
  • Midi skirt with a band/slogan t-shirt (either tucked in or loose over the top) with flats or pumps, and a leather/effect jacket.
  • If in doubt, all black outfits with some coloured shoes can look really stylish.
