How long to people take to pay on eBay?

BriaS · 24/03/2022 19:04

I sold an item for £3400 on eBay last night. The buyer hasn't paid and I haven't heard from them all day. Is this normal?

That's fucking annoying. I always assume that if they don't pay right away, or within 24h, they probably aren't going to 🙄😩

Have you messaged them? I would. Can I ask what it is? #nosey

Yellowleadbetter · 24/03/2022 19:13

Generally within about 2-3 days.
Send them the invoice with a message, give them another 24 hours then cancel the order and delist.

Trouble is I’ve rarely had anyone pay immediately, it’s generally a couple of days.

LabelMaker · 24/03/2022 19:18

They might be waiting until pay day. Very annoying.

LottyD32 · 24/03/2022 20:17

I usually pay immediately.

40Jem · 24/03/2022 20:49

Usually within 24 hours. But that's a lot of money. Perhaps they've changed their mind!

AHungryCaterpillar · 24/03/2022 20:50

I’ve been wondering this but I don’t think people have to pay straight away as it isn’t a “buy it now” item, I think with bidding they have 2 or 3 days.

tillyandmilly · 24/03/2022 20:51

Give them 48 hours if no communication send them a gentle reminder - if they haven’t paid after a week stand a cancellation notice - they will soon pay up !

BriaS · 24/03/2022 21:16

He's just messaged me saying he wants to come and collect the item tomorrow at 10am.

No mention of payment.

OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 24/03/2022 21:18

You don't want him to pay by PayPal if he's collecting it, as he'll claim he hasn't had it and get a refund.

User65412 · 24/03/2022 21:19

Maybe he's assumed that he will do a bank transfer to save on PayPal fees? Usually is for local and items of that kind of value.

BriaS · 24/03/2022 21:20

I haven't sold via eBay in a few years so I'm not sure what's the norm anymore.

It's a piece of kitchen equipment (commercial) which is pretty sought after. It could have sold for double the price if I had the time to advertise it. I wanted a quick sale and I said this on the listing.

Tell him how YOU want him to pay.

Do you want cash on collection -- this saves you a little bit in eBay fees.

Or bank transfer (also saves on fees) in which case he wants item in arm reach before doing bank transfer, seems reasonable to me for such a large sum.

Also probably wants to inspect in person before paying - also reasonable.

He can't get money back in an automatic way if he pays you by cash or bank transfer -- also to your benefit.

eBay still takes a %, just not as much if they don't handle the payment.

Bryonny84 · 24/03/2022 21:30

Make sure you have proof that he has collected it - photos etc. If he pays cash and takes it away he could then file a not received claim with Ebay as there would be no signature with mail/courier delivery to prove it was delivered to him. Ebay always sides with the buyer and could refund him the money from your account.

Be careful, could be a scammer.

DenverDoer · 24/03/2022 21:37

@BriaS

He's just messaged me saying he wants to come and collect the item tomorrow at 10am.

No mention of payment.

Be careful he's not scamming you.

If he wants to collect, then insist on cash.

If he pays via PayPal and then collects it, he can claim he never received the item and the money will be returned, via your account, so you'll be minus the item and the money!

GrunkleStan · 24/03/2022 21:49

If he pays via PayPal, ensure he gives you the collection code.

mrsmacmc · 24/03/2022 21:57

As a buyer - straight away

As a seller - I give 24hrs

caringcarer · 24/03/2022 22:09

I always pay immediately with PayPal.

bake56 · 24/03/2022 22:25

I agree with the others above, be very careful this isn't a scam

foodaddict21 · 28/03/2022 14:36

I hope the collection/payment went OK, OP?

etulosba · 28/03/2022 14:44

I usually pay immediately. However, I don’t always have internet access so occasionally there may be a delay.

No mention of payment.

Just message him back and ask him now he would prefer to pay.

WashedupTroll · 28/03/2022 14:46

Just message him back and ask him now he would prefer to pay.

No don't do that, PayPal can be charge back. Cash on collection

Tonya345 · 28/03/2022 14:53

This has all the hallmarks of a scam to me. If he turns up then insist on cash, and give him a duplicated receipt signed by both of you.
Make him aware beforehand that you will only accept cash.

Riverlee · 28/03/2022 14:57

I found payment can take a couple of days.

However, I agree that cash on collection sounds dodgy - no paper trail. Can he do a bank transfer?

CrotchetyQuaver · 28/03/2022 15:05

If he's paying cash on collection, give him a receipt and get him to sign and print his name on your copy of the receipt.

I wouldn't be overly worried about it being a scam in what you've written so far.

etulosba · 28/03/2022 17:06

If he is collecting you need to make sure you scan the proof of collection QR code that eBay send the buyer (or enter the matching six digit code).
