Blood test results pregnancy

Boopsy89 · 24/03/2022 18:44

Hi, I was just wondering how long blood test results take from having them done at 1st midwife appointment.

I had booking app when 9 weeks pregnant so had bloods taken on 3rd March. It is now 24th march and had my 12 week scan but not heard anything from my blood tests?
Is this normal not to hear anything or do I need to chase them up?

Thanks

Hello! I wouldn’t worry I think you would only hear if there was a problem ☺️

Chely · 24/03/2022 18:47

They'll discuss them at your next appointment if there are no issues.

Bananabutter · 24/03/2022 18:47

You won’t hear anything if there aren’t any problems 😊

lilahbelle · 24/03/2022 18:48

They only contact you if there's a problem. No news is good news in terms of blood tests!

Boopsy89 · 24/03/2022 18:51

Thanks for the replies!
So if something was wrong they would of contacted me by now? Sorry for all the questions things like this just make me anxious an then I start to think something is wrong 🙈

They're aren't really looking for anything wrong this early on, it's more for a baseline and checking your blood type.

Yellowleadbetter · 24/03/2022 18:59

Agree, they only have time to contact folk if something is found on bloods.

There’s no way that they have the staff, time or resources to contact every woman that has bloods taken to tell her that her bloods are fine!

So it’s very normal and everything is ok in this case.

Looseleaf · 24/03/2022 19:04

For me they just lost them so 3 months of blood tests disappeared. When I did ask after them after a new blood test, they said it was fine and they were in the system now but it was only when I asked the midwife to also look that they were definitely ok she said my iron was low.
So in my case it was a bit different and no news just meant they’d been lost?! (3rd trimester of higher risk pregnancy )

Looseleaf · 24/03/2022 19:05

I mean only one was in the system, still don’t know W where the rest went)

Kidsaregrim · 24/03/2022 19:12

They are baseline booking bloods, HIV, syphillis, hep b/c, iron levels blood group, platelets amongst others.
They will then be added to your notes at your first appointment after booking which is normally 16 weeks

If there are any concerns the lab will call the requesting midwife and you will be notified, if no problems the results will be added to your handheld notes (electronic ones if you have them)

You will then have 28 week bloods which are the same minus the infectious diseases.

When you were consented for the bloods they should have explained when you would or would not receive the results, it is poor informed consent that you don’t know

TheDaydreamBelievers · 24/03/2022 19:12

They only tell you if they have worries. I was told they would tell you within a few days if so

Boopsy89 · 24/03/2022 19:36

I can't remember what was said about the results but it's been 3 weeks (14 working days) excluding weekends and I have the 'my pregnancy notes' app which all my appointments and results and details about the pregnancy are on which I have checked daily but nothing has been put on there an I haven't had any letters or phone calls. I understand they can't contact everyone who's bloods are ok to tell them that's why I'm asking if there was something abnormal would someone of contacted me by now?

P.s thank you everyone who has replied

Do you have health anxiety?
Call and ask if you need to x

Boopsy89 · 25/03/2022 10:30

Contacted the doctors and they said they won't receive the results as it's the midwife that has requested them so the results will go straight to her. I've tried contact my midwife several ways through the week and can't get through feel anxious as not heard anything but not sure if thats a good sign or not

I honestly wouldn't worry. Ask about them at your next appointment. I had my booking bloods done a month ago at my 12 week scan and haven't heard anything, although I'm much more relaxed about everything the 2nd time around 🤣

I remember having to ask about them at my 16 week appointment my first pregnancy and they took a quick glance at it and said my iron was good and nothing else to worry about.

oioimatey · 25/03/2022 10:59

No news is good news :)

DrunkUnicorn · 25/03/2022 11:24

I wouldn't worry about it. In both my pregnancies I was not told of my blood test results specifically. I knew they were in the system because the MW made a passing reference to them at the next appointment just to say something like my irons were looking good, etc. If there was any problem, I'm sure they will get in touch with you. Congratulations on your pregnancy, and I hope it goes well !

Boopsy89 · 28/03/2022 11:00

Hi again ...if your designated midwife has been off work ill and she is the one who requested your booking bloods is she the only midwife that can access them or can any midwife? Only asking because if they did find something would any midwife be in contact or would it have to wait until your own midwife is back at work and sees them?

You get a letter if there is any issue, so please stop worrying about all the possibilities.
