To take DD (6) on a day trip when she’s technically off school sick?

DD (6, Y1) has a cough and a bit of a sniffle. On calpol she is completely fine in herself just an annoying and very frequent cough.

PCR and LFT negative.

Just picked her up from school and her teacher made it clear they didn’t expect to see her tomorrow as she is having ‘coughing fits’.

WIBU to take her to the local zoo that she is owed a trip to? She is 100% fine in herself except the cough. She has been promised this visit since Christmas but haven’t been able to fit it in and the weather is due to be lovely!

I would. Hope she's fully better soon.

RainbowRename · 24/03/2022 16:09

To clarify - in my mind she’s not ill enough to stay home. Obviously if she is unwell tomorrow I won’t take her out!

Take her! She's missed out on too much already, all kids have.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 24/03/2022 16:09

Do it!!I would.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 24/03/2022 16:14

I would send her to school

Justcallmebebes · 24/03/2022 16:17

I'd take her anywhere but a zoo

PersephonePomegranate · 24/03/2022 16:17

I would send her to school

OP has said said that school don't want her.

Might as well do something fun!

RainbowRename · 24/03/2022 16:18

onceupon they heavily implied they won’t accept her tomorrow with this cough.

justcall it’s a highly regarded conservation zoo.

@RainbowRename

If she’s negative and well they can’t say she can’t go? Almost an illegal exclusion!!!

MaryAndHerNet · 24/03/2022 16:20

I'd take her.

In my mind, education isn't just in a school, a day at a zoo in the sunshine and fresh aor can be more educational than sitting coughing in a school room.

DrinkingByTheLake · 24/03/2022 16:22

If she’s having coughing fits enough to miss school, she’d be better resting, not being outside.

If you do take her I’d do another LFT before you leave if you have one.

NoodletheSchnoodle · 24/03/2022 16:22

I'd take my son to the zoo in this situation. Enjoy! Smile

DrinkingByTheLake · 24/03/2022 16:24

Also, if she seems well, I’d send her to school, schools are full of coughing kids especially in that age group.

filka · 24/03/2022 16:25

Just don't post the photos on social media

gogohm · 24/03/2022 16:25

If insist she went to school if we'll, if she's having coughing fits still no don't take her to the zoo, it's not only customers that could catch the non covid virus she has but some animals are vulnerable too especially primates

RainbowRename · 24/03/2022 16:25

They'd just phone after an hour and say she wasn't well if i did send her (they have done before with one of my others).

She's outside playing at the moment, coughing a bit but its not stopping her. If she was unwell in herself of course i'd have her at home resting.

SpringSummerAutumnSpring · 24/03/2022 16:25

Well if her coughing fits are so bad that she can’t be in school she’s probably better off resting and getting better. If she’s well enough to go to the zoo I’d be questioning why school say she can’t come in - no positive Covid test, no reason to say she can’t be there.

honeybee1986 · 24/03/2022 16:25

I would definitely take her for a day out if she seems ok , have some fun x

Volhhg · 24/03/2022 16:26

If she's not sick then take her! If school won't have her the rest of the world will

LadyMacduff · 24/03/2022 16:27

Ideally I would send my child to school in this situation, and I don't think I would take kindly to them refusing to take them based on a cough alone.

I would have no qualms on a day trip to take advantage of the lack of queues though if you want to.

RainbowRename · 24/03/2022 16:27

covid cases are high in the school so i get they are cautious, i told them she had tested negative but they were very insistant that her cough was 'coughing fits' and that it was 'disrupting her learning'.

She's not unwell in herself, shes currently on the trampoline!

RainbowRename · 24/03/2022 16:29

she would only be missing the morning of 'proper' lessons as it were, afternoon is PE and whole school worship.

They'd just phone after an hour and say she wasn't well if i did send her (they have done before with one of my others).

Presumably because it’s affecting her ability to do work or she’s not playing, in which case she’s ill and needs to be at home. They don’t send kids home for a bit of a cough if they’re otherwise well.

It sounds like you just want to take her to the zoo, so just do that, you don’t need mumsnet to approve. 🤣

DrinkingByTheLake · 24/03/2022 16:33

If the fits are disrupting her learning, then a day or two at home is what she needs.

OohRahhMaki123 · 24/03/2022 16:34

Just as a side note, I was having coughing but no other symptoms and returning negative LFT results. Wasn't until day 4 of the cough the test was positive!

Personally, I'd be careful and keep her home. But I also don't think you'd be doing anything wrong to take her out, maybe just do another LFT before you go.
