My friend’s colleague put out an appeal for someone to house a Ukrainian family. My friend volunteered thinking it was being done through a charity. Instead, colleague gave my friend’s contact details directly to the Ukrainian family who have contacted her to discuss coming to live with her.

AIBU - these people need a home
YANBU - it should be done through an organisation

Well yes, they do need a home. However your friend can contact voluntary organisations for advice.

Yes it’s legit, government have set it up so it’s individual British families offering to house individual Ukrainian families.
There are some organisations and churches coordinating matching people up too though.

I’m pretty sure your friend has to be registered through the correct channels: someone put something similar on a local resident Facebook page I am part of: but the person asking told everyone who came forward that they would need to be registered on the government’s official volunteer website.

The current pushed gov scheme in the uk is basically this, find a Ukrainian family and make arrangements if you want to help.

I guess what difference would it make if it was done through a charity? I’m not sure what the charity would really do other than put people in touch which has already been done.

Sorry – I should say your friend should be registered through the correct channels: I guess anyone could take someone in, but it leaves the whole thing open to abuse.

This is literally the process the government chose to set up: you sign up on the government's website, name the Ukrainian/s in question and then the process starts from there.

The government didn't want to deal with sorting all out so they have outsourced it to the general public.

The government didn't want to deal with sorting all out so they have outsourced it to the general public.

And if people are abused the government can argue it's not their fault because it was a private arrangement.
