To think our guest parking permits should be kept

Hi,

I live in a flat with three others, in a city centre where parking is very very expensive.

We have a set number of guest permits per year. We have ‘15 days left’ to use until June.

One of of my flatmates has essentially told us that the partner of a friend of hers is going to park there for 8 days. She did ask, but when we said we’d rather keep them ‘just incase’ we had guests or something she pushed back and said we wouldn’t use them anyway.

Maybe we wouldn’t have used them. But I don’t really see why her semi-friend’s partner’s parking is our issue. Why cant they use park and ride like everyone else?

Split them equally. Flatmate can use her 5 on this parking situation and then guest can park and ride for the remaining 3 days.

heldinadream · 21/03/2022 09:42

I'd be suspicious that she's actually charging for this 8 days of parking, i.e. making money that should go to all of you, making it behind your back.

GrowBabyGrow · 21/03/2022 09:44

YANBU, one person can't dictate the use of the passes, they are for everyone! If there's 4 of you total, could you split the left over passes equally? So her friends partner or whoever they are could have 3 days of parking. It's up to your other housemates if they want to give them their passes too but at least then you would have 3-4 passes for your visitors from now until June. And I'd recommend having some planned 'visitors' coming in the next three months so that you can justify to your housemate why they are needed if she kicks off

JellyfishandShells · 21/03/2022 09:46

She’s giving away something that belongs to all of you to someone who has nothing to do with the rest of you ? Cheeky. Also, keeping them in reserve is a good idea - what if there is some problem with the flat that requires a tradesperson needing to park a van ?

Suspicious minds might also wonder if this friend of a friend going to give a little present in consideration of the free parking …….

Hont1986 · 21/03/2022 09:47

The obvious answer is that everyone gets an equal share of the year's passes.

maddy68 · 21/03/2022 09:49

Surely they are shared equally between you ?

You could say you will give them to her on the condition that if you have guests she pays for their parking

Meandthesky · 21/03/2022 10:47

As PP said, divide the remaining passes between you equally. She can do what she likes with hers.

SamphiretheStickerist · 21/03/2022 10:53

@Meandthesky

As PP said, divide the remaining passes between you equally. She can do what she likes with hers.
You mean give her something OP pays for as part of her living there?

Accommodate the CF because she has decided this is going to happen and shows no signs of beign reasonable about it?

OK!

Meandthesky · 21/03/2022 11:07

@SamphiretheStickerist

Divide the passes between the flatmates who are paying for the privilege. The flatmate who wants to allow her mates boyfriend to park can allow them to use their share of the passes if they want to. OP and the other flat mates can keep there’s.

Not sure what’s wrong with that?!

Pompom2367 · 21/03/2022 11:09

Is she maybe charging? Split them between the flatmates

TibetanTerrah · 21/03/2022 11:12

1/4 of the household shouldn't be using half the passes, its still quite a long time until June!

I live in a city centre too (alone) and get 200 a year. Sometimes I use loads in a month, sometimes none at all, but I never know until plans are made! If I shared i would be splitting them equally at the beginning of the period, its the only fair way imo.

NaomhPadraigin · 21/03/2022 11:13

Everyone has pretty much said what I was going to say - split the passes by the number of people in the house. She can use hers as she wants, BUT if she does give them to friend's boyfriend then do not then give her yours when she had none for visitors!

eldora · 21/03/2022 11:19

How do you usually split the tickets?

Is a 4 way split doable/fair?

melj1213 · 21/03/2022 11:36

I have a limited number of parking permits so I know what you mean about wanting to keep some "just in case" but I do think you should let them use some permits.

When I lived in a house share in a big city where we had parking permits we would share the permits equally and keep some for "House use" - so for example if there were 4 people and 100 permits, we'd all get 22 each to do with as we pleased and kept 12 back for things like when we had a repairman round to fix the boiler and they were going to take longer than the hour free parking, we used a "house" permit for his parking.

If you ran out of your personal allocation then you could either make an agreement with another housemate for one of theirs (we usually would trade chores or some other favour) or buy one from the house, as long as everyone agreed, at 75% of the local parking rate. That money would would go into the house petty cash for house stuff (cleaning supplies, loo roll etc) and the odd group takeaway.

Nicholethejewellery · 21/03/2022 11:51

How many do you get in total per year and how many has each person used?

If you got 50 per year for example, and you and the other housemate have used up 35 between you, then this housemate is perfectly reasonable asking to use 8 of the remaining 15.
