If a contact disappears completely off your whataspp contact list does this mean you have been blocked?

More likely they’ve deleted the app.

They’d still be there if you are blocked but without a profile picture/ability to view when they were last online

Yes, they are not showing at all.
I did change my phone over recently and so not sure if it's a syncing problem but it's only this one person who is not showing up on my WhatsApp even though they are in my phone contact list. So even if they did block me on there, I would still see the contact just not recent photo/last seen etc? I don't have contact with this person anymore but would be really sad if they had blocked me everywhere. Stupid I know.

It won't show up if the contact number doesn't have WhatsApp. You said you don't have contact with them any more. Could they have changed their phone number since you last made contact?

Possibly has changed their number. Is that the only thing that could make them completely disappear from the contact whataspp listed?
They did have whataspp before.

My phone died and when I bought the new one I had to use the new temporary number for a few days. When I got the number changed back again I had lost all my contacts. I'm in touch with a few people on here on WhatsApp so if you've tried to get in touch with me I'm really sorry!

Do you still have their number saved in your normal ‘Contacts’?

If you do they should appear on your WhatsApp contacts if it’s an active number. If your blocked their profile picture will be greyed out.

Yes, still have their number saved in my contacts but when I looked they had completely disappeared. No sign of them at all?

Sorry, had their number saved in my 'normal contacts.'
I just wondered if they had removed me from their contacts AND whataspp would they then disappear altogether but it appears not going by these responses.

It looks like they've deleted WhatsApp. People who I know don't have me in their phone book still appear in my WhatsApp list. However, my friend who has recently deleted WhatsApp is no longer showing on there.

Hopefully or they have changed their phone number. Going by what everyone is saying, their name would still show even if I was blocked.
