"Scrubbing the sink"

AIBU to not get what people mean when they refer to "scrubbing the sink" like it's a thing that takes a significant amount of time?
Are people actually scrubbing the kitchen sink or is it a euphemism for deeper cleaning?
And if it's actually scrubbing the actual sink...how is this necessary?
Most kitchen sinks I have known are metal, but even for the non-metal ones, cleaning involves 'spray cleaning stuff, wipe down with sponge. The End.' What are people scrubbing? And why? I don't get it. Confused

Literally never heard anyone say it.

Thatsplentyjack · 20/03/2022 20:18

Never heard anyone say the are scrubbing the kitchen sink. Is this something people do?

Theala · 20/03/2022 20:18

I've read it on several threads here just this weekend.

We now have a metal sink and it’s is wiped down several times a day but every now and then I will spray it will please and use a ‘scrubber’ sponges as I tend to find it does get a slight build up of tea stain etc. - not obvious but once you have cleaner it it Just brings it up much cleaner and sparkly.

We used to in our old house have a cream sink think it was some sort of hard plastic or something and that drove me potty it used to stain so easily and would need a proper scrub every few days

pigsDOfly · 20/03/2022 20:20

Well, if they're scrubbing stainless steel sinks they're going to end up with a very scratched sink.

Mamette · 20/03/2022 20:21

I do scrub ours with barkeepers friend but only about once a fortnight and it takes 2 minutes.

Mamette · 20/03/2022 20:22

I quite like doing it too.

thegcatsmother · 20/03/2022 20:22

Mine is an old butler's sink, so it does get scrubbed every so often.

Theala · 20/03/2022 20:22

Also, there's a whole cleaning system centred around cleaning your sink! Flylady, maybe?

Sink cleaning was a big thing in the Flylady cleaning method...

Theala · 20/03/2022 20:24

@Mamette

I do scrub ours with barkeepers friend but only about once a fortnight and it takes 2 minutes.
What kind of a sink do you have?

Concestor · 20/03/2022 20:28

Ours gets stained with tea and needs a good scrub with CIF. I use a coconut scrubber, especially on the plug/drainer thing. It definitely needs more than a wipe to be properly clean.

Underfrighter · 20/03/2022 20:30

Ours gets stained, bits of food that are wet and dry out and stick on like glue...I'm a but gross in general (never bother cleaning windows, skirting, doors etc unless we ate decorating) but does need a scrub every week, wiping down doesnt clean it properly

vipersnest1 · 20/03/2022 20:31

Very hard water here, so yes, I do give the sink 'a scrub' every now and then to get rid of water marks.

gamerchick · 20/03/2022 20:32

I just use a magic sponge. Gets all.the tannin stains off.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/03/2022 20:33

I scrub my sink. Wiping it down doesn’t clean it properly imo

Nnique · 20/03/2022 20:34

Yep. Ours gets stained with tea. Gets a bit of a scrubbing once in a while when I can be bothered.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/03/2022 20:35

I'm in the US and where I live 'scrubbing the sink' is a pretty common way of saying you're cleaning your sink, anything from spritzing it with spray cleaner and wiping it down to dousing it with cleanser and taking a scrubby-pad to it.

Sparklingbrook · 20/03/2022 20:36

I've not seen any sink scrubbing anywhere.

i don't scrub, i just clean my sink ,like any normal person. It doesn't really get that dirty TBF.

CeleriacOfTheNight · 20/03/2022 20:37

I've heard the 'shine your sink' thing, but no scrubbing here.

Elphame · 20/03/2022 20:39

I'm forever scrubbng mine!

It gets a lot of abuse and a wipe just isn't enough.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 20/03/2022 20:39

Yes I scrub mine I thought every one did
They'd get manky otherwise ?

Ourlady · 20/03/2022 20:40

If you look closely you can usually see a difference in colour, some areas have a brown tinge which are obviously stains. So yes, I do scrub my sink with barkeepers friend once and a while and you can see the difference.

Sparklingbrook · 20/03/2022 20:40

IIRC from the FlyLady thing, it was a thing to not leave a sink full of pots until the next day, so wash up and clean and shine the sink so it's all nice for the next day.
But that was the place that insisted you 'got dressed to your shoes' every morning before doing anything. Grin

ReadyToMoveIt · 20/03/2022 20:43

I wonder how many men spend their Sunday evenings writing posts about how often they scrub their sink? Grin
