They are so wrong! Apart from anything else, it’s obscene for people to shovel down vast amounts of food to win a prize when there are so many starving in the world. Plus it’s bad for you physically.

I’m actually surprised anyone thinks you’re being reasonable. Who cares, you don’t need to watch and there are worse things to get worked up about.

I’m on Facebook a lot and never seen one, so you must have been looking for that shit it it’s showing you a lot of it.

roarfeckingroarr · 19/03/2022 19:44

I've won a few casual ones with friends at all you can eat pizza places and similar. I find it quite fun as a rare thing - and I'm a small size 8 so it's clearly not killing my waistline.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 19/03/2022 19:45

They're mostly marketing gimmicks/money makers.

I don't really see an issue as it's not like they're things people do everyday.

Benvolio · 19/03/2022 20:04

Totally agree. It's not a sport and it shouldn't be entertainment; it's a disgusting travesty of everything civilised and a mockery of sustainability. That Man v Food programme is repulsive. I haven't seen any other examples.

Sexnotgender · 19/03/2022 20:05

YANBU, it’s gross.

BlusteryLake · 19/03/2022 20:11

Displays of gluttony are utterly grotesque.

Eloise666 · 19/03/2022 20:14

It’s obscene and looks absolutely disgusting. I remember my ex watching a “hot dog eating” competition and I naively expected at worst them effectively deepthroating the items straight into the stomach, however to my horror the buns were soaked in water before being shoved in spluttering mouths along with multiple hotdogs spilling out. Just absolutely revolting 🤮

luxxlisbon · 19/03/2022 20:15

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an eating competition other than in an 80’s American movie.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 19/03/2022 20:34

I can’t see the voting figures?

@RachelGreep87 Do you? Why?
thebellsesmereldathebells · 19/03/2022 20:37

Ooh, good one OP Grin great way to bring out the MN food frothers on a Saturday evening!

Have we had "I hate food waste", "nobody needs that much food" and "we all need to eat less meat" yet?

LuckySantangelo35 · 19/03/2022 20:38

Who are the 38% that voted YABU?! And why?!

Perfectlystill · 19/03/2022 20:38

I've never seen one. You just follow some weird stuff to have 'loads' of these weird things come up on your feed?

Perfectlystill · 19/03/2022 20:39

I'm on mobile so can't vote but if I could I would def vote YABU.

Why shouldn't they exist? Should we get rid of marathons because no one needs to run that far?

What a ridiculous comparison.
SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/03/2022 20:44

@Igotjelly

I agree, as someone who previously suffered from bulimia they always have a weird binge vibe, and often the competitors are skinny and attractive so I find myself assuming (rightly or wrongly) that many of them also purge.
I agree with this. I still struggle with bulimia and the idea of shoveling food makes me feel the need to purge. So I avoid anything to do with eating competitions at all cost. I've walked out of a bar before who were challenging people to a 'man Vs food' thing because I just couldn't be in the environment.

That said, many eateries are desperately trying to find a niche or USP against their competitors and a MVF seems to be a big hitter since every other place now does a bottomless brunch type thing.

Tbf, the prize is usually a place in their hall of fame and they don't have to pay for the ridiculous amount of food eaten

Nobody is dying from lack of running though are they? And excess running is not a drain on resources is it? What a silly comparison to draw.
Perfectlystill · 19/03/2022 20:49

It's really not though @tomsellecksloverug

I'm guessing the only people who have an issue with these mega random things I've never come across have eating disorders already and feel upset by them.

The cries to ban this and that because you don't approve of them are ridiculous.

But I am a libertarian and believe in live and let live.

Well given that all those points are valid in a discussion about people shoving piles of meat down their throats, of course they will be mentioned.
Perfectlystill · 19/03/2022 20:50

So if they banned these things would the starving all get fed? How would that work? @BlusteryLake

Honestly the snowflakes on here tonight!

Ownedbymycats · 19/03/2022 20:51

I'm still pondering over how anyone exploded, can that really happen?

No of course not, nor have I suggested that would be the case. The OP has said she finds the display revolting, and I agree. Part of the reason I find it grotesque is that I find wasting a resource that some people don't have enough of offensive.
PinkFluffyUnicornSlippers · 19/03/2022 20:56

Meh. I really can’t get worked up about this. Why don’t you just donate money to a charity who supports people abroad who are starving?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/03/2022 20:57

Blustery it's not always meat (I know I'm sort of missing your point) but I've seen quite a lot of places offering vegan/Vegi alternatives.
Shoveling down a load of jackfruit and jacket potatoes is equally as uncomfortable.
